Diversity in public service makes for better public policy, but the barriers faced by minority communities are immense. Four years ago, we launched our Minority Ethnic Emerging Leaders Programme to break down those barriers. ➡️https://lnkd.in/emwSHk-c #JohnSmithCentreAt10

During NAIDOC Week, we acknowledge the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. We can all seek ways to keep the fire burning, and the South Australian public sector’s Anti-Racism Strategy is an important piece of work that seeks to break down systemic barriers. 1 in 3 South Australians believe they are discriminated against because of their ethnic, cultural, racial background or appearance. There is no place for racism in South Australia, including the public sector. Racism in all forms must be addressed to foster an equitable and inclusive culture that our sector strives for. Last year OCPSE launched the SA public sector’s inaugural Anti-Racism Strategy and Action Plan in partnership with Preventive Health SA. The strategy and action plan outlines how the sector can build the cultural capacity of all employees, providing training and resources to enable employees to stand up and act against racism. Watch the Anti-Racism Strategy video and hear leaders speak openly about this important issue and how we not only need to call people out, but also call people into the conversation to build relationships and connections.

A BALANCED DISC FLIES FURTHEST A disc that is not evenly balanced when thrown, does not spin smoothly and its flight falls short of the potential it had for the force that it carried from the effort of the thrower. Families, institutions and even nations are no different. Balance makes the flight reach its full potential. Institutions including businesses and governments that are dominated by a few clans rarely go far. For example nepotism in areas such as politics, community and business that seeks to perpetuate exclusivity has been known to fail to deliver the outcomes expected of leadership. Here is a short video (4 mins) of the concept of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) that is gathering momentum in workplaces and organizations. The speaker, Jerome Foster II (born 2002) is an American environmental activist. He is the youngest-ever White House advisor in United States history, as a member of the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council within the Biden administration. Foster is a leading voice for marginalized and working class communities in spaces pushing for social, economic and environmental justice. https://lnkd.in/ggxe94dt Nations and institutions will do well to consider the benefits that will accrue if sections of people who are under-represented are included and those that feel unwelcome in society are made to feel comfortable and at home. Many a challenge faced today in nations and communities would have been avoided or at least mitigated if generations gone by had been more sensitive to the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion. We can shape the future if we have the courage to change our mindsets. #goodgovernance #DEI

As a pan-Canadian network, our commitment to inclusion as guided by our Social Justice, Indigenization & Inclusion Committee extends to Indigenous communities and other diverse intersectional identities. At ACCESS, we believe that real change requires centering, engaging, and collaborating with impacted communities - a one size-fits-all approach to clinical care, research, and policy is insufficient and unjust. Yup. And applies far more widely. Our whole economic system and therefore work system/culture is designed in this way, with the same results.
“These are expectations and requirements designed by the very people who have most benefited from them.” This is a sadly brilliant insight into our society. We are not fair, it’s one of our national myths along with kindness.
The dramatic exodus of brown women from parliament is no surprise

The rise of youth engagement in Kenyan politics is a positive development. Young people bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the table. Their activism on issues like climate change, unemployment, and social justice is driving significant change. Encouraging more youth participation in politics is crucial for the country’s future. This could be through voter education programs, youth leadership training, and creating more platforms for young voices to be heard. How can we better support and amplify the voices of young people in politics?
