As we mark World Health Day 2024, it's imperative to recognise that the right to health remains precarious for millions worldwide. Diseases, disasters, conflicts, and environmental degradation threaten lives and well-being on an unprecedented scale.
The theme for this year, 'My health, my right,' underscores the fundamental importance of ensuring universal access to quality health services, education, and information. It's not just a matter of policy; it's a matter of basic human dignity.
✅ Know your health rights: demand safe and quality care without discrimination.
✅ Advocate for change: join movements, participate in discussions, and push for policies that prioritise health equity.
✅ Make informed decisions about your health and empower others to do the same.
Let's stand together to champion health as a fundamental right for all because everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilling life. #WorldHealthDay#HealthForAll#MyHealthMyRight 🌱💪
The Civil Society Call to Action at the health event organised by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 draws the attention to:
- Stronger social protection reaching the people who are left behind
- The need to tackle the climate emergency
- Public-first and person-centered approach across the continuum of care (promotion, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care)
- Inclusion and planetary health underpinning global efforts in health
- Regulation of private actors in health (careful: profit may overtake equity!).
We co-shaped this Call to Action with many other NGOs and the lead of BeCause Health
Great forum! While I half listened to this, there were a lot of emerging themes brought up that look promising.
Some I picked out:
🌎💧 Environmental justice policies, legacy pollution, are ensuring clean air, water, and soil access, esp. for vulnerable communities.
🔬💊 Cancer prevention, ensuring affordable access to life-changing medications, and quality healthcare.
📢🧭Outreach, engagement, navigation, and community health integration to address unmet social needs.
🫱🏽🫲🏽🥼 Emphasizing community representation and cultural competence in healthcare partnerships
↗️↗️🌐 Upstream level solutions, addressing structural factors, emphasizing equity and inclusion, and focusing on solutions for a more equitable world.

This February, we reflect on the journey toward health equity and recognize the importance of addressing historical and contemporary disparities. Achieving health equity goes beyond medical care; it's about overcoming obstacles in access, social structures, and more.
To bridge the gaps in health outcomes, the following are critical:
Equity in Policy: Policies must prioritize equity, ensuring they are created and implemented to close health disparities.
Community Involvement: People with lived experiences are essential in co-designing interventions. Their insights shape initiatives that resonate with the communities they represent.
Collaborative Partnerships: Building bridges between community-based organizations and health systems fosters a comprehensive approach to health, acknowledging the interconnectedness of various factors.
Trusted Care Sources: Community Health Workers (CHWs) are invaluable allies in providing upstream and downstream care. Their trusted presence ensures that health resources are accessible and culturally competent.
