Gina Thomas, MBA, RN, is the Chief Development Officer at Nobis Rehab Partners, and she has some words of wisdom for new nurses. "I would encourage people to reflect on why they got into nursing or what makes them think they want to get into nursing and then start working toward that… The sky's the limit as a nurse; I truly believe that. Even though I'm not in direct patient care now, that nursing foundation has made me who I am today. I still have that calling to help people. So, find your mojo, find your passion, and apply that because nursing can be a great career." This is all connected to the issues that became the core essence for the National Consortium of Academic Nurse Educators (NC-ANE) to organize and address the systemic issue of the nursing shortage and the causes that lead to it. In our research, many factors are interconnected, poor working conditions, lack of post-graduation follow-up or mentoring, short staffing, bullying, the lack of teamwork among unit staff with various types of nurses (per diem, agency, travel nurses, float pool, etc.), more complex patient morbidities, etc. The basic factor that NC-ANE is working on is the collaborative and multi-faceted approach to this nursing shortage. We are rallying academic institutions, healthcare organizations, professional organizations, policymakers, and the consumers of healthcare to come together to address this ANE shortage. In 2025, more full time faculty will retire. Meanwhile we have less and less students pursuing PhDs and MS Nursing Education who are the experts in teaching nursing students because of their specialized knowledge, skills, pedagogical expertise and other educational courses that are germane to ANEs. Academic institutions rely heavily on adjuncts who have primary jobs; clinical faculty in healthcare organizations (HCOs) are supposed to follow up new grads but are so insufficient in number that new grads are assigned to unit nurses (adding to the unit nurse’s workload); or, clinical educators who are pulled to do other roles other than providing the additional or extended orientation to these new nurses. HCOs have limited time and slots to offer to students for actual clinical placements. ANEs are not looked upon in the same level as other nurse specializations, leading to lower wages and less nurses attracted to it; the lack of policy to elevate the important role of ANEs relative to the quality education and socialization of nurses into the profession; and, the lack of understanding by consumers of healthcare as to why there is this perennial lack of nurses when schools graduate many nurses year in and year out. If you wish to help resolve this interrelatedness of the nursing crisis to the lack of ANEs, join us in our mission to elevate the plight of ANEs through advocacy and research in order to influence a collaborative approach to address this, rather than our usual strategy of addressing only one aspect of the nursing shortage, the rapid attrition away from nursing of new nurses, and the lack of preparation of new nursing graduates in dealing with the realities of the profession. New nurses feel like nursing school didn't prepare them for the real world. How do we fix this? I talked to my daughter this weekend about her friend who just started her first nursing job in August of last year. I asked how she liked her job and being a nurse. My daughter said, "She just feels like nursing school didn't prepare her for all the problems she has to deal with, like short-staffed shifts, rude coworkers, and dealing with unit politics. She doesn't think she'll do bedside nursing for very long." I asked if she had anyone she could talk to about how she's feeling who really understands. My daughter said she talks to other new nurses on her unit. I offered to be that safe space for her. We are failing our new nurses in so many ways. Lack of support and mentorship adds to the stress and further opens the door labeled "Exit," not only from the bedside but also from the profession. We need a safe space for nurses to go where they can get the support and mentorship they need. #nursingshortage #nursingcrisis #nursing #nurses #nursesonlinkedin #healthcareonlinkedin #mentorship

Nurses in Michigan reported improved conditions in the 2023 Michigan Nurses Study compared to 2022, but burnout and understaffing remain high, and nearly half reported abuse in the workplace in the last year. Last year, about a third of surveyed nurses planned to leave their jobs (32%) compared to 39% in 2022. New questions in 2023 explored reasons for leaving jobs and future plans, and found that 13% of those leaving planned to exit the nursing profession entirely, excluding retirements. After adding retirements, the number leaving the profession rose to 36%. Christopher Friese, the Elizabeth Tone Hosmer Professor of Nursing at the University of Michigan School of Nursing and the study’s principal investigator, said the 13% group is especially concerning because these are younger nurses in the workforce. "With this new tuition incentive, along with signing and retention incentives for all types of nurses in our state facilities, we are investing significant state resources for the health and well-being of some of our most vulnerable residents.” It's important to focus on solutions when we look at the nursing shortage. One way to make sure we have more nurses is to train more nurses, by improving access to nursing education. Delaware's program is one excellent way to do that. #HealthcareLeadership #Nursing #NursingShortage

NURSING SHORTAGE: A Controversial Statement? I am going to say something that may seem counterintuitive and maybe even ridiculous, to some. Nursing schools are one of the culprits perpetuating the nursing shortage. How is that? Years ago, to enter an advanced practice nursing program, 2 years of critical care experience was required to apply. Then, this requirement changed…suddenly one could graduate from nursing school and the next semester, start a Nurse Practitioner program, without ever practicing a day at the bedside. I know this to be true, because I know nurses that did it. As for CRNA programs, that requirement was reduced to one year of critical care experience before STARTING the program (so they can apply before having been a nurse for a year). This takes nurses away from the bedside before they really even know what they truly enjoy about nursing and before they have gained all of the important knowledge and experience that a nurse gains in those first few years of practice. This also causes immense strain on the hospitals training them, both financially and operationally. Obviously, the nursing schools do this for what reason…the more students they admit, the more money they bring in. No one can blame them for that. However, shouldn’t APP programs be more selective? Shouldn’t it be more important to get the very best and well-prepared nurses to become an APP? I certainly think so. Our profession would benefit by softening the nursing shortage and the APP pool would not be watered down with candidates that likely aren’t prepared for such roles. #nursing #nursingshortage #nurses #nurselife

Nursing is more than a job. It's a calling and an ongoing commitment to learn and serve others with love. 💚 According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN): 👉 Nursing is the nation's largest healthcare profession, with nearly 4.7 million registered nurses (RNs) nationwide. 📈 The federal government projects that more than 200,000 new registered nurse positions will be created each year from now until 2031. 🤝 Nurses comprise the largest component of the healthcare workforce, are the primary providers of hospital patient care, and deliver most of the nation's long-term care. Did you know that HU was voted the #1 school in nursing for the state of Indiana, by our students? And that the program has a 100% job placement rate for the healthcare industry? We'd love to help future caretakers identify if they're being called to serve in the field. Recruiter/President- Over 25 years of recruiting experience helping Healthcare Facilities find top talent.
Why is there such a shortage of Nurses? Primarily because there are not enough Professors and staff to train new nurses. This lead to to nursing schools turning away over91,938 qualified applications from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs. Wow! Yes, many nurses are leaving the profession due to burn out and poor working conditions but it is very difficult to back fill the need for more nurses when over 90,000 are being turned away from nursing school. I have been recruiting RNs and Nurse Practitioners for over 20 years and finding staff to train nurses has always been an issue. #nurses #recruiting #schools
