After a prolonged silence since June 2023, Level Infinite & TiMi Studio Group's Honor Of Kings is breaking the silence with thrilling launch plans! The mobile MOBA, boasting an impressive 100 million active players, is set to spread its wings and expand to new regions. The upcoming international release phase will kick off on February 21, targeting Turkey and select countries in the CIS, Middle East, and North Africa. Following this, a broader release is scheduled for June 20, promising even more global accessibility. Surprisingly, the LinkedIn community hasn't erupted in discussions about this momentous announcement just yet. Given that the Chinese version, King Of Glory, has consistently dominated revenue charts since its inception, the anticipation for Honor Of Kings' global launch is palpable. I can't wait to witness where it will soar to on the global stage! #HonorOfKings #mobilegaming #gamingindustry

Lots in the news of late. How about a more ‘chill’ post. One for the gamers / devs in my network… #MarvelsRivals from NetEase Games is doing very well on Steam. 6v6 PvP shooter, currently has a bigger audience than Sony’s Concord, as well as the genre front runner #Overwatch2 (granted that’s only if you compare Steam numbers). I was keen to give it a spin but sadly I didn’t get a Beta code (despite multiple registrations lol, I’m not at all salty!). I can see Rivals being a success when it eventually launches. The game has a lot going for it, despite the recent cries of ‘superhero fatigue’. The big question I’m interested in is what the monetisation approach will look like. 🤔 As a F2P (free-to-play) game that will pay sizeable license fees I’d be surprised if we *didn’t* see a fairly aggressive approach to monetisation. That said, if NetEase can keep this to cosmetics alone and hit the ground running with a stable enough game and steady stream of live service updates, they should do well. Of course those are a lot of ‘ifs’. Anyhoos. Currently on holiday, so let’s see if I can get me a code before I head back to work! #marvel #liveservice #closedbeta #gaming #entertainment

Can a game that failed in web2 succeed in web3? This JRPG originally backed by Riot Games, Tencent, and NetEase thinks they can hack it. Manasis Refrain is a JRPG (Japanese Role-Playing Game) that shutdown in Sept 2022 According to pitchbook they raised 4 undisclosed funding rounds between 2018 and 2023 — after the servers shutdown! The investors included: • Riot Games • Tencent Investment • NetEase Capital • Kaiser(China) Investment Their CEO also worked at Tencent as a project manager for 3 years. Before founding Inutan Studio, he was the GM of game for Youku Tudou (One of China's leading video hosting co's). Interesting developments to follow at Ubisoft as its share price bounced back by over 30% on Friday, despite still being down by 20%. Speculation that Tencent and the Guillemot family may consider taking the company private, given their combined close to 30% ownership. Is this a defensive strategy against potential industry rivals or private equity firms? With Assassin's Creed Shadows due for release importantly 6 weeks before Xmas it will be interesting to see how the market continues to support #Ubisoft #StockMarket #Finance.

Playtika has acquired mobile developer SuperPlay for $700 million, at the very least. If Tel-Aviv based SuperPlay also hits certain financial targets over three years, an additional contingent consideration of up to $1.25 billion will also go to the company. The acquisition is “expected to add an experienced team to Playtika with a track record of launching new, successful games”. SuperPlay was founded by former Playtika employees Gilad Almog and Eyal Netzer. Both Gilad and Eyal will continue to lead SuperPlay as its own studio within Playtika with this acquisition. Most notably, the SuperPlay is behind two titles: Dice Dreams (a coin looter game), and Domino Dreams (a board focused game). The games currently have a combined 1.7 million average daily active users as of August 2024. Playtika cites a few strategic & financial benefits for the acquisition, such as acquiring the high growth IPs within the Coin Looter and Board categories, adding the strong dev team, and creating an earnout structure that rewards performance while reducing risk. Interesting to see such a large acquisition go through - will be on the lookout for future acquisitions of this scale in gaming.
