One thing I love about SXSW is it brings together a LOT of creative talents, and it's a festival of sharing. And that's a wrap! 🎬 NY Tech Week is officially over and with it, ScaleU's Stoplight Party has come and gone 👋 With only one AC unit in the venue at our inaugural event, we unintentionally managed to create the "hottest event at TECH WEEK by a16z" by at least a few degrees 🥵🥵 Some highlights from our first ever, self-hosted event: 1️⃣ Over 150 enthusiastic attendees joined us and created an electric atmosphere filled with networking and conversation about the biggest tech trends in NYC 🚀 2️⃣ We managed to strike the perfect balance with a strong mix of founders, hiring managers, and candidates eager for new opportunities. We've already gotten great feedback from a few founder attendees and suggestions for our next event! 3️⃣ Among the standout founders present were leaders from Seed and Series A companies specializing in AI, SaaS, consumer tech, and healthcare. Their insights and experiences added immense value to the discussions and, we hope, helped spark some great new ideas and relationships. Always a good time listening to Garry Tan from YCombinator, especially as someone who loved Posterous when it first launched. Posting my top 3 takeaways here: 1  Right outcome wrong reason: On rage quitting - as employee no.10 at palantir, his compatriot got promoted over him and as such he quit and ended up applying to YC. "In any situation that you are in, the thing to keep in mind is that every job you might have ultimately is about creating value. There are two things - one is whether you are earning and also whether you are learning. If you are not doing at least one of the two, life is short + you are smart, so think about options." 2. One of the things that YC is always looking for: What's the special insight you have that nobody else has? A good example of this is from Ryan Petersen of Flexport - he would spend alot of time between US and China importing medical bath tubs and he knows this very antiquated market forwards and backwards. 3. Listening to the sound of your own voice when society says it's all wrong - that's the sound of something very big. Be able to listen to the sound of your own voice, and be able to distinguish it from the consensus of the common person. Thanks to Y Combinator and Startup SG for organizing this!
