Part of making family building affordable for our community is by getting employers to improve family building benefits for the LGBTQ+ community. One of the first steps you can take in your own journey to parenthood is asking your employer what benefits they provide to reduce family building costs, and to let it be known if family building is important to you as well as what benefits you would value and like to see. Thank you to Men Having Babies, Inc for diving deeper into our family building journey and sharing our story. Our family wouldn't have been possible without some of the most favorable LGBTQ+ family building benefits out there - and for that we are beyond grateful. That we had these incredible benefits and still had to request donations to our surrogacy journey fund versus gifts at our wedding and still had take out a loan gives you the sense of just how costly family building can be for our community! The world becomes undoubtedly better with more LGBTQ+ families, yet the economic barrier to entry risks making family building for our community a privilege available only to those who can afford it. This doesn't foster diversity nor is it equal. If you dream of being a parent, you know the feeling in your heart of wanting beyond comprehension. If you've become a parent you know the moment your soul felt complete. These are not human emotions unique to the wealthy, and it's our proud mission as a company to help make those experiences accessible to anyone in the LGBTQ+ community with those dreams, regardless of income.
Men Having Babies commends Meta for offering its employees LGBTQ+ inclusive financial benefits for their fatherhood journeys. As an employee of Meta at the time, Pat Dolan was able to access financial assistance of $100,000 for him and his husband Carlos Dolan on their journey to fatherhood via surrogacy. “We knew that Pat’s employer at the time had SOME kind of family building benefits but weren’t sure of the specifics," Carlos told us. "MHB New York was the impetus for us contacting the HR team to really delve into what the benefits package entailed.” The help that they received inspired them to give back to the community. The couple turned activists for gay family building, and now founded (BUM) Bottoms Up Movement, with the idea of selling products and donating portions of the revenue to LGBTQ family building nonprofit organizations (including Men Having Babies). Read the couple's full story: https://lnkd.in/gyx3-ZCD If you received family building benefits to help with your surrogacy journey please let us know! If you are a gay men pursuing surrogacy - ask HR at your workplace about family building benefits. #employersurrogacybenefits #menhavingbabies #gaydads

THIS is why I work with Fertility Matters at Work. Changing the work landscape. Taking an employee centred approach. Engaging employers and employees with the need to create safe workspaces for everyone on a fertility journey. So they can be the best employees they can be. And eventually the best parents too. ##lgbtparenting #Inclusion #reproductiveequity
A week’s worth of reasons why employees leave.... there’s no recognition or support for LGBTQ+ family building. They are using surrogacy to have a baby. Met initially with.... “Why?” Not… 'How exciting', 'how lovely', 'what an amazing thing for you'. Laid bare for those at work to comment on. Can't you have children? Do you think you're Kim Kardashian? I thought you were single? I thought you were gay, why do you want kids? (Insert your own comment here _________________) Applications for parental orders in the UK have quadrupled in the last 10 years, signalling the increased need to understand this path to parenthood. Through our work with intended parents, we hear daily just how unprepared organisations are to support those on alternative paths to parenthood and how unsupported these employees feel. We’re here to support organisations to understand the diverse ways in which people build their families and how to implement inclusive fertility support as a fertility friendly employer. Over a weeklong event in November, The F Word at Work Live will bring together features lived experience and insights from this community within our panel on intersectionality: acknowledging and supporting diverse fertility experiences to help you create a more inclusive, supportive environment for your team.
