The B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) is leveraging British Columbia's extensive coastline and ocean science expertise to pioneer groundbreaking solutions in carbon dioxide removal. In collaboration with Planetary Technologies and Coastal Carbon, CICE is investing in pilots and field trials focused on ocean-based methods to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
These projects aim to assess the effectiveness of various ocean carbon dioxide removal techniques while evaluating their impact on coastal communities and marine environments.

CORL champions innovation in artificial reef development, collaborating with Subcon to create modular reef designs that serve as vital habitats for marine life and contribute to coastal protection by dissipating wave energy. Partnerships with industry leaders like MMA Offshore have led to the successful deployment of artificial reefs in Western Australia and beyond, demonstrating the tangible impact of research collaborations on real-world challenges.
As a hub for marine innovation, CORL leverages its state-of-the-art facilities and expertise to drive transformative change, fostering collaboration between researchers and industry stakeholders for a sustainable blue economy.

It's time for "energy from heaven not from hell." (Sun vs Fossil Fuels)
40% of all shipping cargo around the world contains fossil fuels.
We talked about the need for increased urban density (7-20 HH per acre) to make energy and transit infrastructure economically feasible and the barriers created by hyper-individualism. When asked "What's the most impactful career move aspiring environmental activists can make?", his response (paraphrasing):
"Do whatever gives you a sense of purpose, but don't sign up for a 100-hour work week. Save some time to be less of an individual and build community wherever you are. Get outside and get to know your neighbors."
Sage advice, IMHO.

Minimizing the cost to the world can be achieved through innovative strategies such as:
Recycling: Implement a comprehensive recycling program to reuse materials and reduce waste in space construction.
Micro Ads for Funding: Use micropayments from a global network of internet users who voluntarily view ads to fund the project. A small fraction of ad revenues can accumulate to support such a monumental endeavor.
International Collaboration: Encourage collaboration among nations, sharing the cost and benefits of the solar power station, making it a truly global effort.
In summary, focusing on building a solar power station around the sun rather than missions to Mars offers significant advantages in terms of energy, exploration, and sustainability. While this 150-year plan is ambitious, it has the potential to usher in a new era of clean, abundant energy and drive humanity's exploration of the cosmos to unprecedented heights........if you guys will get your heads out of the war machine.
The first workshop in the 2024 NTNU energy transiton week in Trondheim just kicked off. It deals with social conflicts and tensions in the transition
Energy transitions are often talked about as a journey of innovation, technology, and integration. But this workshop broadens our view to understand how these transitions involve different interests across society and how this creates conflict. We invite scholars, policy makers, industry, and activists to explore three themes that span local, national, and international scales.
One theme is power dynamics and development pathways. Transitions need to transform societies into new states, but efforts are mostly driven by dominant actors, which could create new societal lock-ins and environmental problems.
Another theme is urgency versus justice. Quick action on climate change is necessary, but transitions need to be just and inclusive to ensure legitimacy and tap creativity. We will explore tensions around this accelerated speed.
The third theme is the competition between different interests. Scarce resources like land, capital, and minerals are increasingly required during transitions, leading to conflicts between different groups such as indigenous people and renewable energy producers. We will discuss emerging interests and potential solutions.
