Who is the boss? I've done lots of work with mid-sized businesses who are experiencing growing pains as they make the gargantuan leap from small mom-and-pop shop to serious business. Some departments are easy to restructure as they grow. Invoice comes in, AP pays, uploads to bookkeeping software, etc. Marketing is arguably the most difficult department to systematize because there are so many variables and wish lists, and you're dealing with creatives, a decidedly unsystematic species, for the most part. For me, the number one rule is, who is the boss? It can be home grown talent with great potential, or we can hire someone new, but it's important to establish one person as point guard or quarterback. They assign tasks, watch deadlines, and move projects along. They don't even have to be creative! But everyone on the team has to know who the boss is. Only then can we work to sort out the beautiful mess that is marketing. As the inimitable Charna Ambers taught me, never move ahead before you know who the decision maker is. #marketing #teamwork
