Over my career, I've hired hundreds of new team members yet all the most successful candidates have shared the same traits: They have can-do attitudes and make things happen. They're excited to build something from scratch. They are forever exploring new ways of working. They all possess a "start-up mentality". They want to get their hands dirty. They're passionate about learning. They don't follow the playbook. They push boundaries. They love to innovate. They're driven. When it comes to our venues, we strive to innovate, bring a fresh perspective, and throw the playbook out of the window, so why should our approach to hiring be any different? You can teach the finer details or the technical aspects of any role, but you can’t teach passion, hunger, or a desire to learn. Why are VC firms hiring more platform roles than ever before? According to VC Stack, more than half of VC firms now have some role dedicated to “platform”, which has doubled since 2000. Platform roles range anywhere from hosting events/workshops and building strategic partnerships, to the firm’s basic branding and marketing. Having a solid platform team or “Head of Platform” might be the difference between who gets that next deal; your firm or the one next door. VC firms that have strategic platform strategies do better on average than those that don’t. Especially for younger firms.
