The Illusory Truth Effect is a cognitive bias wherein our brains perceive information as more credible and truthful simply because we've encountered it repeatedly. Familiarity breeds belief, even if the information is initially recognized as false. Disinformation campaigns capitalize on this effect, bombarding us with false narratives until they become familiar. Does dialogue work truly make a difference? Here's a hard truth: the data says no. But I'm not ready to give up on it yet. This question been on our minds at Cohesion Strategy. And in order to answer whether dialogue really makes a difference, we believe it's necessary to review all the outcomes, expected and not, of bias reduction interventions. For example, so many folks in the pro-democracy sector came to that work through broader, lighter-touch bridging programs like cross-partisan or interfaith dialogue programs. AKA the same programs that appear to have minimal effect on most participants. Are we missing an important part of the story by not taking a wider view at our evaluation efforts?
