Excited to attend the Baltic VCA Summit in Vilnius today! This event has been the largest gathering for key players in the Baltic Private Equity and Venture Capital industry for over a decade, and I’m looking forward to insightful discussions with industry leaders. Over the next two days, I will engage with regional LPs and GPs, discussing some of the most pressing topics, including: 1. Macroeconomic trends and their impact on the PE/VC sector. 2. LP perspectives on the next few years—expectations, challenges, and new opportunities. 3. Strengthening regional cooperation across the Baltic, Nordic-Baltic, and European landscapes. 4. Exploring innovative fund structures, exit strategies, and financing mechanisms. Looking forward to insightful discussions and future collaborations! #BalticVC #PrivateEquity #VentureCapital #Vilnius #InvestmentStrategies #Summit2024

Attending Meet the Managers in Cape Town... As always Kevin Hinton and his entire team has put totgether an amazing event. Currently - attending Sumesh Chetty and the bias is strong... Global equity is the only option... This time things are different - #SASucks into perpetuity and why would you want to hold anything other than the best in class global businesses... WOW! The facts are a little more nuanced and requires every singe investor to #QuestionTheNarrative. Global has its place and the current cycle has been in favour of holding global assets - especially the high quality global franchise businesses... BUT - the market does move in cycles and #CyclesDominatesSkill. When you are "incredibly certain" of specific outcomes - the surprises are often massive... As the great philosopher Mike Gerard Tyson said : "Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the mouth" Empirical evidence is clear - #SAAssetsDominate over time based on the entrenched real return profile. It is structural in nature. I have a question - could this be the top the the US Tech Cycle as it was in March 2000? Seems preposterous... #ShiftHappens

We all have a role in the energy transition. Making energy available requires new technology, and that means more jobs and a healthier planet. It is inspiring to see #Massachusetts and other states connecting the dots and driving the ecosystem forward.
#Massachusetts is the innovation state. Now, we have an opportunity to be the climate innovation lab for the world – the place where #climatetech companies start, scale, and succeed. MassCEC CEO Emily Reichert testified today alongside Shreya Dave of Via Separations and Tadeu Carneiro of Boston Metal in front of the Joint Committee on Economic and Emerging Technologies in support of Governor Healey’s Mass Leads Act, a bill that proposes a 10-year, $1.3 billion investment in the climatetech industry. This would generate $16.4 billion for the Massachusetts economy and create thousands of jobs across the Commonwealth. That’s a return on investment of 12-to-1! Thank you to Chair Jerry Parisella, Chair Barry Finegold, Vice Chair Andy X. Vargas, Vice Chair Liz Miranda, and all members of the Joint Committee for their commitment to Massachusetts’ economic competitiveness!

This year I have struggled to find a hook for my usual connection of Valentia Island (one of the most Westerly parts of Europe) to global asset management. The internet, AI etc. - it all started here through the communications revolution and sheer excess of ambition that was the transatlantic cable. Fear not dear reader, I have asked the universe and it has brought an ETF connection no less - connecting the Island to Deutsche Bank, Societe Generale and BNP Paribas. These entities have ETF businesses and it is no surprise to see the continued rapid growth in ETF assets - and if current growth continues Ireland will likely become the largest funds domicile in Europe. The transatlantic cable changed the face of global communications in the way ETFs are changing asset management - globalizing and driving savings and investment as part of the broader tool kit of vanilla funds, managed accounts and private assets. Sir Maurice FitzGerald (1844-1916), the 20th Knight of Kerry and 2nd Baronet of Valentia was the last of his family to live on Valentia Island. His wife Amélie Bischoffsheim (1858-1947), was a daughter of the Dutch banker Henri Louis Bischoffsheim (1829-1908). The Bischoffsheim family founded three of the largest banks in the world: Deutsche Bank, Paribas and Société Générale - and there you have it, tangential but a dot joined! UNESCO The Valentia Transatlantic Cable Foundation, alongside the Irish Government, continues to work to achieve UNESCO world heritage status for the Cable Stations on Valentia Island and in Hearts Content, Newfoundland. I wish Leonard Hobbs and others the very best in achieving same. It was lovely to meet Michelle Lloyd of K&L Gates and Aisling O'Carroll of IDA Ireland whilst our kids swam in the harbour and we could have a coffee and discuss importance of China and Asia-Pac to the growing Irish Funds role in international asset management. Finally, a shout out to all those in our industry and government with island connections working to grow the financial services and technology sectors in Ireland Michael W.
