Great Architecture for All! David Baker Architects have beautifully demonstrated this with their latest project, Blue Oak Landing, transforming the public housing narrative in a breathtaking way. Typically, public housing projects are simplified to functional, minimal designs, often resembling nothing more than concrete boxes. However, Blue Oak Landing breaks away from this mold by: 1) Elevating Aesthetics with Modular Construction: The building's cladding not only leverages modular construction for efficiency but also enhances the structure’s visual appeal with weathered steel, adding a touch of elegance and durability. 2) Smart Orientation for Natural Ventilation: The thoughtful orientation of the units maximizes natural airflow, significantly improving indoor air quality and comfort for its residents. 3) Energy Efficiency: Aimed at achieving zero energy status, the project exemplifies how design and functionality can converge to create environmentally sustainable living spaces. The structure appealed to me as an advance material in the construction field. Mass timber has been projected as one of the sustainable and eco friendly as its carbon footprint is minimal. As my coursework demanded reading about different materials such as Mass timber, #3dmodeling of the project and #prefabrication. This building seems to captivate my interest and hence I would like to put my thoughts forward. The building displays new ideas of construction and detailing. It also partially applies the technique of prefabrication in the construction process, making it a truly progressive building. The architects and the engineer have taken the benefits of #masstimber into account. The #fireretardant properties and the ecological benefits of Mass timber over other materials have been carefully taken into consideration and put to use. Of course, there are also other factors that we need to pay attention to when we project these new ideas. There are various researches also ongoing that debate over the pros and cons of this material and the construction process in use. I understand that projecting a new technique/material needs to have a proper thought process and knowledge of the gains and impacts that it would have to the environment. 

Dutch architect Powerhouse Company has revealed its #design for a modular #timber, 82-unit social housing project in #Rotterdam that it says is demountable. The 12-storey, 40m-high Valckensteyn #housing block will be built in Pendrecht, a southern suburb of Rotterdam built during the city’s post-war #reconstruction, and now suffering from social deprivation. The largest timber #building of its kind in the #Netherlands, it will occupy the site of an earlier social housing #project of the same name. Stefan Prins, the lead #architect, said the aim of the design was to “showcase the harmony of concrete stability and wooden #innovation, where #sustainability meets affordability”. About 85% of the building will be taken up by the timber elements, stiffened by a #concrete elevator core. The timber #structure will be light enough to use the old #foundations, thereby cutting out a whole package of works. The building itself will be built up from a range of factory-fabricated cross-laminated-timber modules laid on a plinth clad in travertine, a sedimentary rock. These are assembled without the use of glue, meaning the building can be demounted rather than #demolished at the end of its life. The lower storeys have floor-to-ceiling windows, and the flats on the western #facade have wide balconies. The flower gardens and arboretum were designed by Rotterdam firm LAP Landscape & Urban Design with #biodiversity in mind. The client for the project is the Woonstad Rotterdam Housing Corporation. Dutch engineer IOB handles the structural and #MEP elements, and was also the #QS. The #cost of the project has not been revealed.
