Don't miss it. 📆 Matthew Pillar's talking to two career pros in #SingleUse systems, Mark Petrich and Paul Priebe, during a Bioprocess Online Live event on April 24. Here's a peek at their agenda for the day. 🍃 Sustainability — despite the extra plastic waste, evidence shows #SUT is more sustainable. 💸 Costs — over time, SUT can cost 25% less than stainless. ⚖ Standards — SUT are pretty well established, but still evolving. ⛓ Supply chain — interoperability remains a big watch-out as more SUT manufacturers enter the field.

Using packaging that's eco-friendly, doesn't make a lot of waste and uses materials that can be recycled or break down naturally, has become pretty common. But when it comes to making medical packaging that's good for the environment, there are a bunch of tricky challenges to overcome. Medical devices and pharmaceutical industries are one of the biggest and most important in the modern world. And almost everything they produce needs to be carefully protected when in transit: vaccine and drug vials that require temperature control environment, MRI, radiotherapy and other massive, fragile and really expensive machines that help save lives and more. These industries use a lot of materials for packaging and transportation. Until now there were not a lot of packaging options to choose from, with polystyrene leading on the market. It’s used for its protective and cushioning abilities. Since it’s impossible to use less packaging, companies have to be smart about what materials they use. Right now, a lot of medical items get packed in foamed plastic, which creates a ton of waste in landfills and releases tiny bits of plastic into the environment. But there are already eco-friendly packing options on the market that medical companies could start using instead, like plant-based packaging made by S.Lab: 💪 Boasting 3 times the tensile strength of polystyrene, our packaging guarantees resilience without harming the environment 🔥 Our packaging surpasses polystyrene by 2 fire retardant classes, ensuring safety and sustainability ☔ Has the same features as polystyrene in terms of thermal insulation and water resistance If you work for medical and pharmaceutical industries – share your experiences with us, and we’ll be happy to help your company become more sustainable. #SLab #Pharmaceuticals #Packaging #Sustainability #Pharma

Finding solutions, not just alternatives, is key to tackling the plastic crisis. AggiePol is an innovative platform designed to provide a truly sustainable option to replace traditional plastics. The novel bioplastic is derived entirely from natural feedstocks and is readily biodegradable, breaking down into natural, non-toxic sugars. The material provides a viable alternative to the microplastics that are pervasive in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, working with many types of additives from dyes to composites and plasticizers. With its ability to be fine-tuned for specific degradation rates, AggiePol is versatile enough for a wide range of uses, setting a new standard in the industry’s move towards eco-friendly solutions.🌱 #Bioplastic #Technology #AggiePol

An interesting read... For obvious reasons (patient safety regulations), no pharmaceutical companies have decided to change the packaging of a major product to use PCR, compostable plastic or other pro-environment plastic solutions. With the current pace of relevant technological advancements and the complete lack of regulatory change, companies need to explore other options. Most obviously, glass has a very low environmental impact (after manufacture). It can be recycled infinitely and still be used for pharmaceutical purposes; it is inert in the environment and offers excellent protection for sensitive medications. However, there are also drawbacks to consider: Weight: Glass is significantly heavier than plastic, increasing transportation emissions. Breakage: Glass vials and bottles can break during shipping and handling, leading to wasted product and potential safety hazards. Energy Consumption: While recyclable, the initial manufacturing process for glass uses a significant amount of energy. Here's where the conversation gets interesting: Can we find ways to optimize glass packaging design to reduce weight and breakage rates? Are there opportunities for collaboration between pharmaceutical and glass companies to improve the environmental footprint of glass production? The ideal solution likely lies in a multi-pronged approach that considers both patient safety and environmental impact. Let's encourage open discussion and explore innovative solutions within the current regulatory framework! #pharmaceuticals #sustainability #packaging #environment #pharmaceuticalpackaging

Implementing point-of-care diagnostics has environmental benefits in terms of reducing travel to central hubs, but why stop there? How sustainable can we make the tests themselves?
There is strong demand to deliver ever more diagnostic tests closer to the patient that can provide lab-quality results. We took up the challenge to create an immunoassay platform suitable for distributed environments without sacrificing the test quality - all whilst reducing the virgin plastic content of the single-use consumable. We worked with Prolight Diagnostics to develop an innovative new immunoassay platform called ecoFlex, made from recycled paper pulp, that achieves a 95% reduction in plastic use compared to the equivalent central-lab test. With a target cost of <$1, ecoFlex can be competitive with existing lateral-flow strips whilst the MicroFlex technology at its heart enables lab-quality, quantitative results in a point-of-care format. Read the full case study: https://lnkd.in/eD4Z2Kbm TTP and Prolight Diagnostics are on a mission to bring ecoFlex to the market. Under a commercialisation agreement, we're seeking development partners to join us in making sustainable diagnostics a reality. 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧 | Recycling pathways for single-use flexible plastic bags in pharmaceutical applications We're excited to share progress from our consortium, which comprises key partners such as Janssen-Biologics, Wittenburg BV, RENOLIT Healthcare Solutions, Avantor Sciences, Thermo Fisher, Polymer Science Park, Bristol Myers Squibb, BioBTX and Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency (NFIA) on developing recycling pathways for single-use flexible plastic bags in pharmaceutical settings. Our collaborative effort is focused on sustainable end-of-life solutions for these materials, which are rich in recyclable polyethylene (PE). Phase 1 insights have revealed that both mechanical and chemical recycling methods hold promise after the removal of single-use assemblies from the bioreactor bags. Mechanical recycling has been identified as a low CO2 impact route for creating new packaging, while chemical recycling could provide new building blocks for circular production. The next phase aims to expand our business case, requiring more end users to join the initiative and a waste handler partner for decontamination services. This expansion is crucial for the economic viability of the recycling process and compliance with regulatory standards. ➡️ For more information or to join us, we invite you to reach out and connect with us #sustainability #pharma #recyclinginnovation #circulareconomy #circularplastics J&J Innovative Medicine Nederland TNO
