Exploring ASME B31.3 Process Piping Tests: Pneumatic vs. Hydrostatic In the realm of process piping, ensuring structural integrity is paramount. Two common methods prescribed by ASME B31.3 for assessing this integrity are pneumatic and hydrostatic tests. Pneumatic Test: Utilizes compressed air or inert gas, with test pressure typically set at 1.1-1.5 times the design pressure. Ideal for systems unsuitable for water, like those containing reactive fluids. However, safety precautions are essential due to compressed gas hazards. Hydrostatic Test: Employs water or another liquid medium, applying pressure at least 1.5 times the design pressure (or 1.25 times if design temperature exceeds test temperature). While safer than pneumatic tests, not suitable for all systems, particularly those sensitive to water. Choosing between these tests involves considering factors like system characteristics, safety concerns, and regulatory requirements. Both ensure the piping system's reliability, but the choice depends on the specific needs of the project.
