Formula E has become synonymous with sustainability in motor racing, but its credibility has been questioned of late with an expansion of the race calendar and a controversial new sponsorship deal. The latest championship came to a close with the final two races in London last weekend. In all, this year’s series featured 18 races in 13 cities, beating the previous record of 16 races in 10 cities in 2022. Beginning in Mexico City in January, the 2023 championship moved on to Diriyah in Saudi Arabia and then Hyderabad, Cape Town, Sao Paulo, Berlin, Monaco, Jakarta, Portland and Rome. Despite the expansion in the race calendar – as well as a global sponsorship deal with a subsidiary of Saudi Arabian oil giant Aramco – Formula E says it is staying true to its sustainability ethos. In my latest monthly blog about sport and sustainability for Zero Carbon Academy, I examine Formula E's claims, look at how it is said to be reaching net zero, and consider what the future might hold for the series. #FormulaE #sustainability #netzero #sportbiz
