Advancing 3D printing technology one layer at a time—our new preprint on 3D-printed foams is now live! In this work, we explore how dynamic covalent chemistry can be used to achieve enhanced foam expansion and improved mechanical resilience. These findings demonstrate the potential for designing lightweight, customizable and high-performance materials that address critical challenges in manufacturing and materials science. Last week, the University of Maine unveiled the world's largest 3D printer, four times larger than their previous largest printer. The new printer is big enough to print a house and can print up to 227 kg of material per hour. 3D printing has advanced rapidly in the last 20 years, primarily due to improved material technology and additives. Delamination, for example, can occur when the adhesion between the polymer layers is insufficient. Surface-treated fumed silica is one such additive that has driven the advancement of 3D printing by offering improved adhesion. AEROSIL® R fumed silica grades from Evonik provide considerable control over the surface properties of the hardened structure, enhancing adhesion by up to 30% and significantly improving mechanical properties such as impact resistance, structural toughness, and resilience. While it is unlikely that we will all be living in 3D-printed houses anytime soon, this breakthrough could be utilised for historical restoration and for quickly and affordably producing parts of buildings destroyed by natural disasters.
