𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐚’𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 Botswana’s dairy industry continues to grapple with a significant dependence on imports, with 85% of the national milk demand sourced from neighboring countries. Essential dairy products, including fresh milk, butter, cheese, and whey, remain largely imported, while local production meets only 15% of demand. Minister of Trade and Industry Mmusi Kgafela said that the Milk Afric Dairy project will play a pivotal role in addressing the issue of import substitution, reducing the outflow of capital, and boosting our local production capacity. "By keeping more of our dairy production within our borders, we not only strengthen our food security but also lay the groundwork for developing a thriving domestic dairy industry that can compete regionally and, in the future, globally," he said. "As we continue to advance Botswana’s agricultural agenda, the dairy sector presents both a challenge and a significant opportunity. Currently, only 15% of the national milk demand is met through local production, leaving an overwhelming 85% reliant on imports. This imbalance highlights immense potential for growth and investment."

On the back of a 30 year low point of milk production in Australia in FY23, we are witnessing the spiral death and continued decline of one of Australia’s largest Agricultural sectors. The avalanche of cheap imports, a heavily regulated milk price and a system that fails to recognise the importance of protecting Australia’s competitiveness globally are just a few of the issues which processors are having to deal with today. More important than “free trade” it needs to be “fair trade” and the current status quo can only lead towards large asset rationalisation across Australia, leading to job losses, farmer income losses and disinvestment in economically fragile locations. Perhaps naive of me but I am hopeful that this article sparks government interest to kick off a review that is so much needed and way overdue!
