Lamenting Hagerty has a point about waning nostalgia vs. current market reality… That historic nostalgia used to have a Jaguar as a de facto choice of your favorite Rich Relative or Rock Star! And of the times, I too grew up riding-in and coveting this marque more than any other, and why not, their vintage models looked like nothing else on the road. I get it, generations – and Rock Stars – change: other than Morgan Motor Company, most car companies have left esoteric and eccentric design, behind.  And if not declining design, perhaps it’s ownership oversight? [[Look what happened to the legend of Saab!]] Likewise, I can’t say today’s Tata Land Rovers – or Jags – are yearned for the same way as British-Leyland like eras once were… Perhaps it’s that loss of British-ness, then too? Speaking of the Rich & Rock Stars – Rolls-Royce Motor Cars (RR) certainly hasn’t lost a Britannia step! Proving there’s so much more to British Motoring than “Bond Cars”, that era of Jaguar XK-anything were so close to RR craftsmanship, but on a budget, and damn fun to drive… No, there was NOTHING on the road, then – nor since - like a Jag. However, like RR - today’s Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, etc. is as EXCITING today as it was yesterday / yesteryear! That IS RELEVANT to today’s values and "grail wants". It would be sad to see Jaguars lose this same excitement, but I can see a bit why and what happened. A while ago, I sold a Jag VDP Majestic – 1 of, like, 500 – for nothing $ to a collector in NY who wanted to own an example of every XJ6 made. When I picked him up at the airport, I found out he was my dad’s age, no different than my mechanic, and today Jag Works in St. Pete, FL is CLOSED… I'm older now too, so no good signs for a post-Radwood era... Looking on the bright-side – gotta! – over 2 million people per year will see that Jaguar E-type at the MOMA in NY! And monied collectors can, sometimes, be a charitable sort – look at BMW Isettas, Micro-Cars, and the Concours d’Lemons – and so perhaps in the years to come they will help raise awareness and prices. And why not?
