Boeing created a chief safety officer role after two planes crashed. Safety did not improve. Enron had a chief compliance officer. Compliance did not improve. Yahoo had a chief innovation officer. Innovation did not improve. SA created a minister of electricity. Power Supply did not improve. American vehicle manufacturers have a chief quality officer. Quality did not improve. Telco’s have a chief customer officer but customer experience does not improve Most entities have a chief digital officer. But customer digital solutions do not improve. These jobs are just corporate bandaids to crucial operational issues. The executive get to feel like they have done something. You cannot manage detailed outputs and outcomes from the centre. They are like a tiny rudder on a giant oil tanker. The only outputs at the centre are email, PowerPoint, Word and Excel. Not value. Value is created in the line. The centre is about direction, resource allocation, surveillance and control. The line is about head , heart and hands. You cannot instruct or command employees to be more safe, innovative, quality conscious or customer centric. They must believe. Believe it’s important. Believe in their colleagues and processes. And believe in themselves. Only then will you get results. You need to embed the culture , behaviour and attitudes into every member of the business and let them execute it in the line, the process, the customer interaction. Only then will the execution path change. And this is why culture eats strategy for breakfast.
