Recently, I was able to do a ride-a-long with @William Belk. It’s was an amazing experience as I watched him interact with his clients. It was obvious that Will has been providing QDS quality service to them. My experience led me to a few lessons: 1. The importance of walking a mile in somebody else’s shoe. As an HR Manager I gained valuable insight into our Field Service Technician’s daily job - insight I could only gain by actually doing some of their job. 2. The importance of allowing employees to make minor mistakes so they can learn from them. I failed to put a band back around one of the wheels (Forgive me for wrongful terminaligy) This led to me having to disassemble the machine again to put the missing band on. (Actually Will did it for me. He was a gracious and patient teacher.) The “pain of the minor mistake” made me remember to check those bands going forward! 3. The importance of allowing someone to do something their way as long as it gets the same results in the same amount of time. As I was allowed to to work on the machines with a little less supervision 😏, I changed the order of the way I disassembled the machine. Will not only gave me that freedom to choose how I did it, he also asked why I chose to do it the way that I did. Good leaders allow employees to choose their individual way as long as it produces that same results within the same reasonable time. They are also willing to learn from their direct reports. It shouldn’t be “my way of the highway” with our employees! After the machines are disassembled, cleaned and then reassembled, they get calibrated to make sure everything is working properly. This led to my final lesson: 4. The importance of doing PMs (strategic planning) with calibrations (assessments) As a company we must determine what “dust” (barrier) we need to remove because it is holding us back from functioning at our best. We need to use the right tools (plan) to get rid of the “dust” (barriers) that are keeping us from running at our best capacity. And, we must “calibrate” (access) if those plans/changes are working. PMs may not be fun to do but they are essential for greater efficiency! Thank you QDS, Inc. Field Service Technicians for keeping our clients’ machines running at full efficiency!

Technician recruiting is wild these days…. Used to it was good enough to promise loads of work, give a great pay plan, provide structure, and a good environment. Technicians would show up and show out! They felt appreciated because of all the above. It was a beautiful thing! Technicians understood it was a two way relationship of give and take on both sides. Now, it’s… “Give me all the money before I show you what I can do” “It better be a guarantee” “I want $25 more per hour than the market” “Don’t require me to hit a goal of any sort” “Don’t expect me to accept responsibility or respond well to accountability of any sort” “I’ll work on my terms, not in the best interest of the customer or the dealership” I know that technicians have not been favored well through the years but man, it sure makes it hard for us guys out there trying to do the right things.
