During #MICEO Executive Director Roy Messing’s upcoming trip to Emilia Romagna region in Italy (Bologna), he is planning to visit a series of Cooperatives. There are four major types of cooperatives in this region, which are outlined below: 1. User Coops – created by people who use the products/services of their cooperative and can be found in #retailtrade, utilities, credit, insurance, and housing. 2. Producer’s coops – formed by members who produce in the company they own and have #cooperative assistance in buying inputs, marketing, and processing their outputs. #Farmer cooperatives are the best example of this cooperative type. 3. Social Coops – These are formed to deliver personal services to the #community and stimulate #workopportunities for handicapped individuals. 4. Worker coops – The members (owners) of the company are the workers. Workers supply capital and participate in #managing the operation. An ecosystem has been established over the years to help support these cooperative enterprises. While there is professional support, government agencies, #unions, universities, and religious institutions also have a major influence on maintaining a strong cooperative community.
