Our Joni's House program in East St. Louis had a special gift for the students and staff at William Bedell Achievement and Resource Center and Wood River Schools. Sixty incredible youth with disabilities received Joni and Friends t-shirts, Phillip’s Love Bears, and treat bags, while 67 devoted educators were celebrated with cookie tins, t-shirts, and heartfelt encouragement cards! An administrator shared, “People gift our children often. No one gifts the staff. Thank you for seeing and remembering us.” Let’s take a moment to recognize the educators who pour love, patience, and dedication into the lives of children and adults with disabilities. Their work transforms lives and strengthens communities. Tag an educator from your community below and thank them for their incredible work. They deserve it! 🙌 #Teachers #SpecialNeeds #Disability

Schools succeed with our disability awareness programme designed especially for children. The school based, ‘See me, not my CP’ was created by founder of Ability Consultancy Claire Buckle who was determined to destigmatise disability using her lived experience of Cerebral Palsy (CP). After Claire retired from athletics, the former GB para-athlete created the school-based programme ‘See me, not my CP’ for children, young people, and their educators to learn about disability. The programme is led by disabled people sharing their experiences, which in turn supports other disabled young people along with their peers, and addresses the general stereotyping of disability in society. Many schools currently do not include disability history in their curriculum, but it’s time to change that. Students often miss out on learning about disability activists, laws, history, and culture. While some states like Massachusetts, New Jersey, Nevada, California, and Kansas have introduced disability-inclusive curriculum standards, their enforcement remains lax. It's important for all students to have a more inclusive education in history. Without this knowledge, students may remain unaware of significant social and political issues. By incorporating disability history into education, students can better advocate for themselves and others. People with disabilities are integral members of our community, and their history deserves recognition and discussion!
