Taking "Think Globally, Act Locally" to a whole other level.
When I first heard of various cities across the country issuing symbolic resolutions for a cease-fire in Gaza, my first thought, as usual, was a question:
“Why are local officials, with enough on their hands, getting involved with Foreign affairs?” Followed by “Why are people demanding this declaration from their local officials instead of contacting their Congressional representatives”.
And almost as quickly as I asked the question, I knew the answer. They do it because it’s increasingly clear that Congress is disinterested in listening to the people who pay their salaries, who voted them into office, and who will vote them out.
As a result, when the legislated channels of communication are ineffective, citizens are finding alternative ways to have their voices heard. And so Bravo/Brava to the local officials who listen to the voices of their constituents, who listen to the people and who are willing to take the time to amplify their voices.
Perhaps the Chamber of Commerce manta of so many years has larger implications after all “Think Globally. Act Locally”.
