After a lengthy trip to the USA, here’s a lengthy video as to some of my learnings from the B2B demand marketing environment stateside.
More content to follow, but for now, although too many people to thank individually, can I say a big thank you to colleagues, clients, partners, friends and future collaborators, who gave me such a warm welcome, hospitality and opportunity to chat.

This seems to have become my new normal backdrop of a hotel room. But this is the last video from me in the US. My trip, which has lasted 2 1/2 weeks as I've sort of zigzagged across America, is coming to an end. And I thought before I jump on that flight back to the UK, I'd share with you what my learnings, what have I heard from B to B marketers right across the US? What the challenging, the facing, what's the commonalities that I've heard? But really, what's my learning? So no particular order, but a couple of things that I've just stood out. For me throughout this conversation, so number one, there is a huge, huge desire from B to B marketers to do something innovative. They want to do something new in demand marketing, they want to do something new in lead generation. But there's almost a nervousness to come off what's come before. I think innovation comes with it and expected results. It comes a nervousness of whether it's going to deliver. So whilst I've seen and heard a real desire to do new things with that marketing budget, there is still also. Reluctance or lack or nervousness about really jumping full footed or two footed into those new innovative ways of working. So I think innovations coming. I think there's a real desire to do new things, but I also think there's a nervousness with all that's going on in the economy, all that's going on both sides of the ponds in terms of elections and still whether you know we are or aren't in a recession, I think it's making markers a little bit nervous, a little bit anxious to actually put dollars to new innovative ideas despite the. Decide to do so. One big learning that I just didn't see coming over here was ChatGPT is fast becoming a search engine of choice and so many marketers that I spoke to on this trip told me they are trying to work out how to get ChatGPT featuring in their search terms. More and more, I think there's some research has come out the last week that has as many as 5% of people in buying decisions now are not jumping on Google, they're jumping on ChatGPT to find the answer to solutions. So how do marketers tackle that? It's almost getting the robots to talk to robots, but ChatGPT and not the term of making work easier. But how do you feature your brand in amongst that search term is is something that I have right across. Telemarketing, we're in 2024 and almost every conversation I've had with B to B marketers in the US has been around how telemarketing can support the help they need with telemarketing or how fundamental telemarketing is part of their marketing channel. So 2024, on one hand we're talking about AI, we're talking about ChatGPT, but on the other hand, telemarketing just kept coming through as conversations. So that's something again, I did not see as as such a primary concern or interest. For marketers. And linked to that. And linked to my first point around innovation, everybody seems to be talking about BANT, that methodology of trying to qualify leads, budget, authority, need and time. Despite the fact it came from the 1930s, despite the fact that IBM, who invented banks, are no longer using that methodology, It's still a methodology that I heard time and time again around lead qualification. And the other thing that really picked off for me is. I've spent time with so many people that I know in this market. I've spent time with colleagues, I've spent time with friends. But nothing beats getting in front of people. The conversations I've had, the interaction I've had, the ability to really read a room, to understand what are the challenges, but to talk more around humanization. You have more in common with people than you might think. And whilst if you're trying to sell into B2B marketers or B to B marketers are trying to sell their products outwards, nothing beats getting in front of people and having those conversations. So. I've learned a huge amount on this trip. I'm gonna try and document some of the other sides that I learned, but just from this final video, I wanted to share those things that really stood out to me. So finally, thanks to everybody that's made this trip such a brilliant trip. I've had breakfast, lunch, and dinner almost every day with people in this space. I've met clients, I've met colleagues, I've met prospects. But what's really come to the fore and what I really want to promote on this trip is it's just been a brilliant trip meeting people. So my advice is you can do business over the phone, you can make partnerships connected globally, but if you can, and you have the ability to do so, get in front of people. You'd be amazed at what you learn, but more importantly, you'd be amazed at the fun you had. So that's it from my US trip this time around, but I'll try and document some of the other learnings once I get back to good old Blighty.
