Take Up Space --- In this picture is a detachment officer in charge, a doctor, a pilot, and an intelligence officer. This 2015 throwback will always make me smile because these women were and still are some of the boldest women I know who continue to step out and take.up.space. When I commissioned in the United States Marine Corps only 6% of all officers were women, but almost 11 years later that has increased to almost 16%! I am not unfamiliar with being in male dominated spaces and I have been fortunate to have some amazing mentors both men and women. This is why I am so excited about The Million Women in Construction Initiative and the groundbreaking effort aimed at integrating women into the construction industry, not just on the ground but in leadership roles as well. This initiative mirrors efforts in the military where the data shows a deliberate shift towards greater diversity and inclusion efforts pay off. As we celebrate progress across various sectors, it's crucial to highlight the significant strides women are making in traditionally male-dominated fields like construction and the military. Both sectors are critical to our nation's infrastructure and defense, and the increased participation of women only strengthens our collective capabilities. The construction industry, with its vast impact on our economy and daily lives, is now recognizing the immense value that a diverse workforce brings. Similarly, the military has been actively working to ensure that the contributions of women are not only recognized but also expanded. This alignment in values and goals between two such pivotal sectors is not just encouraging; it's a blueprint for other industries to follow. It’s a testament to how diversity, especially gender diversity, enriches our professional and communal landscapes.
