"The Legacy of Brightside and Stelco" In May 1910, visionary land developer W.D. Flatt embarked on an ambitious project, filing Survey 453 with plans to cultivate the Brightside neighborhood along the bustling industrial waterfront of Hamilton. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in urban development, intertwining the fate of this promising neighborhood with the industrial expansion of the era. Just a month later, in June 1910, a pivotal moment in Canadian industry unfolded as various small enterprises merged, giving rise to the Steel Company of Canada, known as Stelco. This amalgamation heralded the birth of Canada's largest steel producer of the 20th century, setting the stage for monumental growth and innovation in the steel industry. The story of Brightside is a testament to the profound impact of industrial giants like Stelco on the communities that grow in their shadows. The neighborhood thrived, its fortunes closely linked to the ebbs and flows of Stelco's success, until its ultimate decline in 1968. This historical narrative reminds us of the intricate relationship between industrial development and urban growth. As we reflect on the legacy of Brightside and Stelco, let's engage in thoughtful discussions on sustainable development and the importance of balancing industrial progress with community well-being. #History #IndustrialHeritage #UrbanDevelopment #Stelco #Hamilton #CanadianIndustry

A small but significant snippet of Gunlake Concrete and Gunlake Quarries rich history! 🕰️ In 1939, Gunlake’s founding family the O'Neil’s, pioneers in the quarrying industry, sought new frontiers beyond Western Australia. Their journey led them to Sydney, where they discovered a promising hard rock site near St Marys. This is when the O'Neils established Australian Blue Metal, marking the beginning of a legacy in quarrying and distribution operations (see image). However, their aspirations were soon met with the upheaval of World War II, as all equipment was requisitioned for defence efforts. Undeterred by adversity, the O'Neil family pivoted, contributing their expertise to critical defence projects under the Civil Defence Corp. Fate led them back to Broken Hill, where they reconnected with their place of origin and played a pivotal role in constructing a railway and transport hub in the area. Post-war, the O'Neils returned to their roots, establishing quarries in Broken Hill and Adelaide. Their enduring legacy embodies perseverance, innovation, and a dedication to building a brighter future. Create. Innovate. #GunlakeLegacy #Pioneering #BuildingHistory #TeamGunlake #GunlakeConcrete #GunlakeQuarries #Legacy #Build #Concrete #Quarry #Create #Innovate #History #Innovation #GunlakeGroup

Stone-quarrying is an industry to which medieval records refer more frequently than enlighteningly. The Strutt family has been quarried stone in Belper, Derbyshire, since the 1700s. The Strutt Family built their original mills from sandstone, as well as houses, churches, schools, bridges, and hospitals. Many of these buildings are still standing today. In my research, I found that the Strutts owned 20 quarries in Belper, Blackbrook, Chevin, Milford, Holbrook, and Bargate. I’m sure there are many more stone quarries, which I haven’t mentioned in the documentary. The Strutts quarries were mostly sandstone of different courses and colours. Strutts also had Derbyshire Millstone Grit quarry. Many quarries were used for building projects such as Mill Buildings, Musket walls, Railway Cutting and towers. Strutts understood they could save on transportation time by quarrying nearest the possible source. Workers came from far and wide to work as stone masons and labourers in Belper, which saw a boom in the Industrial Revolution. https://lnkd.in/eVaZw46D

Tomorrow, Thursday 25th April 2024, marks 65 years since the St. Lawrence Seaway opened to deep sea ocean vessels, opening up the Great Lakes of North America to ocean vessels travelling from the Atlantic Ocean as far inland as Duluth, Minnesota! 📍🚢⚓🌐 A system of locks, canals and channels stretching 3,700km inland, St. Lawrence Seaway is considered to be one of the great engineering marvels from the 20th century. For container shipping, which was just in its infancy in the 1960s, the opening of the causeway provided a cost effective, safe, reliable, and environmentally smart means of moving raw materials, agricultural commodities, and manufactured products to and from domestic and global markets. 🚢💧🌎 Today, the successful operation of St. Lawrence Seaway is a major driver of the Northern American economy, accounting for 30% of combined Canadian and US economic activity and employment. Put simply, if the region were a country it would be deemed the third largest economy in the world! 🌎📈💸💵🔎 #containershipping #history #transportandlogistics #isotank #northamerica #stlawrenceseaway

7moFour generations of my family have now worked for Stelco. Would be need to have an old home in the area turned into a Brightside museum. I had never heard of 'Brightside' as a neighbkurhood until a few years back. It's fun following the Facebook page.
