Congratulations again on this excellent volume Profs Caroline B Ncube, Bita Amani and Matthew Rimmer. It was a pleasure contributing my chapter titled "Branding as a Tool to promote Geographical Indication Exports and Sustainable Development in Africa." In grounding the chapter on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 and Target 17.11, the central research question the chapter addressed is: how can Africa use geographical indications (GIs) to increase trade and exports? Increasing trade and exports will propel Africa towards achieving its Agenda 2063 and SDG 17. GIs are products linked to their geographical origins due to special qualities, characteristics or reputation. I argued that GIs can contribute to achieving SDG Target 17.11, namely to ‘significantly increase the exports of developing countries’ through, inter alia, branding. I maintained that, although GIs have the potential to contribute to endogenous sustainable development in Africa via trade and exports, African countries have not maximised this potential for four key reasons. Importantly, I included a fun example on Ogogoro in my analysis :). I look forward to the book launches!

Excited to announce our latest publication in BMC Cancer: "Validity of Central Pain Processing Biomarkers for Predicting Oncological Chronic Pain: a study protocol." Our study within the PAINLESS Consortium examines how QST and EEG biomarkers (along with clinical and sociodemographic variables) analyzed through AI algorithms, can predict chronic pain in cancer patients. 📊 Key points: - 450 patients with oncological pain will be assessed at the time of diagnosis and 6 and 12 months later - The study aims to develop a prediction tool for oncological pain 💡 Implications: This research will provide critical insights into the mechanisms of cancer-related pain. Our predictive tool is expected to be a “game-changer” in anticipating chronic pain, helping in decission making and improving patient outcomes. Our colleagues, together with our partner Eduburgh team, have published a peer-reviewed paper titled “Rethinking (Local) Integration: Domains of Integration and Their Durability in Kismayo and Garowe” in the Fronter Journal. Read the paper in full➡ https://bit.ly/4aY1N1a.

Many say that Garowe and Kismayo offer far more employment opportunities in comparison to their former rural villages and towns, which have been devastated by war and drought. However, many lament that recent years have seen struggling economies, particularly for those living in displacement settlements. Our study revealed that the majority of IDPs are engaged in casual and domestic labor, accounting for 31.6 and 31.7% respectively. In contrast, only 13.7% of IDPs are involved in “skilled” work (such as nurses, musicians, and artists), and only 0.08% are working in Somalia's production sector, which includes fishing, farming, and animal rearing. Our qualitative data shows that IDP communities lack qualifications and skills to enhance their employment. Read more ➡https://bit.ly/4aY1N1a.
