Stop Confusing Strategy with Planning! Last week, someone sent over a proposal they’d been sent by an agency which was owned by a ‘friend-of-a-friend’ of theirs. They wanted another pair of eyes on it. The proposal had a full “strategy” section but it wasn’t a strategy at all! There was a lot of WHAT they were going to do (channels & tactics), but no alignment to a higher goal of how this was achieving the client’s goals It’s common to confuse strategy with planning, but let’s clarify the difference. Strategy is your overarching vision – it’s what you aim to achieve. Think of it as your ultimate objective and how you aim to win. Planning involves the steps you’ll take to reach that objective, detailing each action. Without a clear strategy, your plans might not lead anywhere. However, with a well-defined strategy, your planning becomes much more effective.

A plan is not a strategy. Watch out for the 'strategic planning' trap: 𝟭/ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 'Strategic Planning' sounds cool but there is often no strategy in it. 𝟮/ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 Strategy is about coherent choices, but plans can be disparate lists. 𝟯/ 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 With plans, we are effectively our own customer, can control resources with relative certainty, and usually always say we delivered to plan. 𝟰/ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 In strategy, the customer is external and we can't control their reactions with certainty, hence why we may have angst and default to planning. 𝟱/ 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻, 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 As we're busy making plans all the time, someone out there will be doing strategy and figuring out how to win and erode our market share. ---------------------- A plan is not a strategy [𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲] Share your views [𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁] Follow me George Paras💡for more strategy. ----------------------
