74 years ago, Robert Schuman presented his Declaration on the Future of Europe. It marked the beginning of the European project as we know it nowadays, led firstly by the creation of a common market of coal and steel aiming to ensure peace solidarity in Europe. The EU is a project to ensure peace in Europe, but today we face possibly one of the toughest moments to the endurance of peace. The invasion of Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East, migratory movements, far right and other disruptive tendencies pose a grave threat to our stability. As Schuman mentioned at the beginning of his Declaration "World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it”. To that end, we must find ways to endure and further develop the European project. In addition, we need to focus on solidarity again, as fellow Europeans. The European project is not something finished and we should not take it for granted. As Europeans we all must be aware of the importance of the EU and fight for it. We also must actively participate in the decisions made in the European Institutions, and the first step is to place your vote for the next elections (June 9th in Portugal). Quoting Schuman again, “Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan: it will be formed through concrete measures which bring about a de facto solidarity." Let’s celebrate today our biggest achievement as European citizens and take the stand by voting next month. #EU #Europeanelections #vote #Schumandeclaration #Europeday #Europe

The EU has started accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova; Hungary is against it but will not block it. On June 25, 2024, the European Union officially started negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova to join the EU, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, adding: "The road ahead will be difficult, but full of opportunities." According to her, accession negotiations are necessary to prepare the country for EU membership, but there will be no "shortcuts." At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, said that after the accession negotiations are completed, the first steps will be the concluding successful negotiations with the EC and Ukraine's achievement of compliance with the accession criteria, as well as the decision to sign an agreement on Ukraine's accession to the EU. The last step will be the agreement being ratified by the EU countries and Ukraine's acquisition of full EU membership. In response, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said: "Hungary does not agree with this accession process, but we do not block it and support the start of negotiations." https://lnkd.in/dPVi3tSm

The power of dialogue Had a fascinating and thought-provoking discussion with a group of senior citizens about the European Union. Some eursceptic voices in the audiences raised concerns about bureaucracy, migration policy and overpaid eurocrats and posed challenging questions on Schengen and Hungary and leaders like Viktor Orban. It was an opportunity to revisit the EU’s origin, such as the European Coal and Steel Community and how this idea was put forward only 5 years after the end of WWII by Robert Schuman. I highlighted the role of the EU in securing peace and fostering cooperation, the Single Market, the Euro and many other achievements which can make us proud to be European. By the end of the conversation, the group expressed gratitude for the received information and acknowledged the value of the EU. This was my approach how to turn these visitors into EU Ambassadors: 1. Let the talk first and get the steam out - Giving people space to air their concerns can help defuse tension early on. (I noted all the remarks on a flip chart). 2. Listen actively - It‘s crucial to listen and understand where their perspectives are coming from. 3. Stay calm and focus on the facts - Reminding them of the historical significance and the EU‘s role in peace, cooperation and wealth keeps the conversation grounded I always prefer dialogue over lecture. And it works wonders 😊 #ExploreTheEU #IntoEU #ExperienceEU #LessonsLearned #CommunicationSkills

How does the European Council decide? Ahead of the extraordinary #EUCO, I gave an interview to POLITICO Europe about how this young institution operates and what its real nature is. The EU Council is an eminently POLITICAL institution, tasked to merely provide political direction to the EU. Therefore it enjoys extremely limited decision-making capacity insofar as is not supposed to exercise legislative functions (Art. 15(1) TEU), but how does it decide? EUCO acts by consensus unless the treaties provide otherwise. What’s CONSENSUS? Consensus requires a large majority but not unanimity and in any event there can’t be consensus if one Member expresses objections. Yet as Orban docet if he doesn’t, that abstention won’t per se stop consensus. However, when it comes to today's decision on EU aid to Ukraine, the Commission deliberately decided to link its adoption to the the MFF. This means that the Council (not EUCO) must vote it by UNANIMITY. As this won’t happen, a plan B is needed today #EUCO https://lnkd.in/dU_wv8UM

What is happening with North America all makes sense to me now... I see the bigger picture , besides the obvious betrayal of dual citizen leaders in US government. Between this 3SI axis power (reminiscent of the Pale of Settlement. migration after WW1 and the cause of WW2 - see map )and the Biblical Greater Israel project ( see map ) to control the ports and trade routes from Africa and the Arabian Sea the only thing standing in the way of total control of the world economy and food distribution just as Henry Kissinger predicted, indeed, planned ,is... Turkey. Either they submit and capitulate to 3SI & GIP , or if I was a military logistician I would start WW3 with simultaneous strikes in Istanbul , Izmir , Bursa and Ankara once Syria is subjugated and Iran on my right flank a smoldering ruin. I no longer wonder and question,Why ? the American people contribute Hundreds of Billions of the wealth of their nation to their own impoverishment and continuing ruin every year to the Ukraine and Greater Israel, they are linchpins, Ukraine to Isolate Russia from the Black Sea and Greater Israel to Isolate Africa and the ASEAN Union . With both positioned to a pincer movement with NATO to dominate Turkey and the Mediterranean sea to the straights of Gibraltar, completely isolating Russia from the west. In other words, Americans are being sacrificed for building an Empire they have no part of while turning the West Coast/South Coast of the US into a weak and exposed ,inviting means of migration just as happened after WW1 to Europe......Which brings to mind the haunting words of Israeli Prime Minister ,Benjamin Netanyahu; “Once we squeeze all we can out of the United States, it can dry up and blow away.” Now I know why he said it . https://lnkd.in/gBxaDeND

🌍 I am delighted to share insights from my latest article, published yesterday in a newspaper of record, Diário de Notícias 🌍 Since its inception in 1957, the European Union (EU) has expanded from 6 founding nations to a formidable bloc of 27 diverse states: a success story, symbolizing unity across a continent once divided by the Cold War. 🌍 Yet, enlargement has also unveiled challenges and tensions, demanding resilience and a committed vision towards the European project. The historic fifth enlargement underscored institutional frailties within the EU, shifting the mood from euphoria to a more cautious interrogation of its future. 🌍 The enlargement flame was naturally rekindled by the geopolitical upheaval triggered by the war in the Ukraine. However, Charles Michel’s assertion that integration of the aspirant nations (of which there are 10) should take place by 2030 might overlook significant economic, territorial, and diplomatic hurdles that need addressing. 🌍 The ongoing issues exemplified by Hungary under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, such as the misuse of veto powers and challenges to the rule of law, highlight the urgent need for reform in EU's decision-making processes and governance structures. 🌍 As the EU continues to navigate these internal challenges and external geopolitical crises, its path will significantly influence its identity and role on the global stage. The choices made today will define the EU's trajectory and its capacity to act as a cohesive supranational entity. 🔍 What do you think are the critical factors that will determine the EU's future? How should the EU balance its internal reforms with its enlargement ambitions? #EuropeanUnion #Geopolitics #EUReform #EnlargementPolicy #GlobalAffairs

🎉 Today we celebrate Europe Day! On 9 May 1950, Robert Schuman, then French foreign minister, presented the so-called Schuman Declaration, which proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community. His vision was to create a community of countries working together for peace and prosperity. Six countries (France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg) signed this treaty in 1950. This marked the beginning of what is now the EU. Since then, the EU has grown up to 27 countries and expanded its political, economic, and security cooperation. 🤝 This day should remind us that cooperation trumps over conflict and we celebrate the unity and peace in Europe.
