Is Product-Market Fit enough to define and measure success when it comes to education? In Cognitive Horizons new piece, we introduce the idea of Cognitive-Market Fit, an approach to align product development with scientific research in order to achieve an intended learning outcome for a specific demographic. The goal is not to dismiss the significance of Product-Market Fit, but rather propose that we evolve and tailor its principles to the unique landscape of edtech solutions and their specific context. There are a few examples of companies leading the way in taking a science-first approach. CogniFit, Digital Promise, and Duolingo stand out as they make significant investments to fund brain science studies as well as learning efficacy research. They use this kind of evidence to make careful decisions about the user experience and functionality of the product. Finally, we share a few ideas and recommendations of practical things entrepreneurs in the space can do to build with a Cognitive-Markt Fit mindset. Long overdue, but I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Founder & Co-CEO at Mundos.ai At Mundos, we are re-imagining the role of social media in our lives. Over the past few decades, social media has played a significant role in how we communicate, connect, and see the world. The reality is that existing platforms are stealing our attention, rather than nurturing it. They induce us to behave a certain way without regard on how it may impact our long-term goals and worldview. The promise of a true decentralised internet that works for everyone has fallen short. Instead, we believe in a digital world that amplifies the genuine and creative spirit inherent in every individual. A place where everyone can be authentic, make genuine connections, and achieve their most ambitious goals. Mundos is a social platform where ideas and curiosity come to life through the power of collective knowledge and sustained creativity. Built and owned by their users. I'm so excited to embark on this journey with fellow co-founders Valéria Tedesco and Dimas Timmers, along with the brilliant team Henrique da Ponte, Gus and supportive advisors and investors who believe in our mission. More updates coming soon! #artificialintelliegence #socialmedia #creativity

Have you ever wondered how long it would take you to learn a new language? The Economist recently explored this question, taking into account factors like writing systems (e.g. Latin alphabet vs. Chinese characters), sound familiarity (e.g. clicking sounds in Khoisan languages), lexicon (e.g. if you know "agua" in Spanish, it's much easier to figure out Italian "acqua" and English "aquatic"), and grammar (in Chinese, for instance, by adding "过" after a verb you can form the past tense). Achieving Professional Proficiency in a language like Chinese requires approximately 88 weeks of full-time learning. That's 112 hours per week (assuming 16 hours a day as "full-time") and a whopping 9,856 hours in total. Now, let's put this into perspective. Imagine dedicating one hour a day to learning Chinese. That's 365 hours per year. At this rate, it would take you approximately 27 years to reach professional proficiency! And this doesn't even take into account that the learning curve is drastically different when you're spending just an hour a day compared to those dedicating a full 16 hours. This is a powerful reminder that mastering any skill, especially a complex one, takes time, effort, and dedication. When we're learning a new language, we intuitively understand that immersion—living in the country where the language is spoken—offers the fastest path to proficiency. We get instant feedback, interact in real-world scenarios, and learn not in a vacuum but within a rich cultural context. Yet, when it comes to acquiring other skills, we often rely on reading books, practicing in isolation, and neglect the essential element of experimenting with our newfound expertise in real-life situations. We may even hesitate, fearing that we'll come across as underqualified or unprepared. As we move forward in a rapidly evolving job market, characterized by the growing importance of re-skilling and upskilling, it's key that we rethink our approach to learning. What new mechanisms will allow us to expedite the cycle of acquiring and mastering new skills? (Article link in the comments) #education #upskilling #technology #innovation

Interesting thoughts here by Booost Education, advocating for ethical use of AI in Education. Beyond all the excitement, it's important to consider that AI could have a profound impact on human cognition, but there are some really inspiring cases that show the positive impact of the technology when used responsibly. For instance, Nuance Communications uses Natural Language Processing to transcribe speech to text, making it easier for students with accessibility requirements that find written communication cognitively taxing to find their voice. It shows that this technology can influence the way we learn, think, and connect. As we move forward, some questions that I believe are worth thinking about: 🔍 Dimension-Specific Assessments: should we develop a framework to evaluate AI's risk and impact based on its target domain? There are big differences between solutions that affect student-teacher connection and tools that streamline administrative tasks or make easier the grading of exams. ✅ Inclusivity & Equity: can AI, in any way, help us bridge the digital divide, ensuring accessibility for all learners regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds? In Brazil, for instance, over 10,000 schools don't even have access to the internet... In Kenya, Eneza Education is trying to bring education to low-cost mobile devices and use SMS as a way to extend education in remote areas. 💯 Ethical AI Implementation: do we understand the implications of AI on data privacy, security, and transparency? Building trust across the education community now can help for safe use and implementation as these solutions go mainstream. #artificialintelliegence #education #innovation
AI in education is a hot topic at the moment - it’s growing at a rapid rate, and some worry that unchecked, it could do more harm than good 🤔 We think AI has an important role in the future of education, but it needs to be handled responsibly. In Cognitive Horizons new article, we explore AI through the lenses of a middle school teacher and center the discussion around a key question: can AI and teachers coexist? We explore the fictional character's reflections as she encounters AI tools like Noodle Factory (Teacher assistant), Sibme (Virtual Coach for Techers) or Parlay Ideas (Virtual Student Roundtables). Ultimately, we must be critical when testing and implementing these tools. It's important not to sacrifice scientifically-backed and evidence-based research in exchange for shiny new tools. But, if used appropriately, they may empower teachers to provide more personalized and adaptive instruction, and even scale the impact of their teaching beyond a singular geographic location. Thank you for the feedback and comments! Hope you like it. #artificialintelliegence #education #ai #teaching
AI and human teachers may be able to coexist, but we must be criticial and avoid sacrificing scientifically-backed research in exchange for shiny new tools. The education of future generations is at stake, and it is up to us to strike the balance between innovation and evidence-based practice. Embracing AI in education can open doors to personalized learning and data-driven insights, and empower educators like never before. In this new piece, we explore this dynamic through the lenses of Sarah, a 29 year old math teacher who, although skeptical, encounters some practical use cases to enhance her teaching experience. She learns about: 1. Noodle Factory's AI assistant and analytics capacabilities to identify struggling areas in student learning. 2. Parlay Ideas real-time data and virtual roundtables to spark inclusive and engaging class discussions on challenging topics. 3. Sibme's AI video coaching feature to fine-tune her teaching style and observe how other teachers approach instruction. For the past year, I have immersed myself in the world of education, trying to understand how artificial intelligence may impact the fundamental experience that is learning. Today I'm thrilled to launch Cognitive Horizons, an incubator of ideas to explore the captivating world of AI and its profound impact on education, careers, and the future workforce. The goal is to dissect potential scenarios that could play out while keeping you and I in the loop about emerging tools that challenge the concept of human skill. In its first release, Cognitive Horizons takes you on an adventure through the story of Maya, a fictional character navigating a path of self-discovery in a world where AI is ubiquitous. As she interacts with tools like Seenapse or Looka , Maya has to reflect on the role she must play to remain relevant in a new landscape. She learns to: 1. Embrace skill augmentation: blend AI with her talents to amplify her strenghts 2. Expose herself to new tools: as she uses them, she begins to understand how to maximize their effect 3. Question her role in this new reality: she challenges the true reach of these tools, and finds a way to position herself in this new playing field Hope you enjoy it! #artificialintelliegence #education #careerbuilding #careers #innnovation

Industry incumbents are facing the challenge to compete against digital disruption and, more than ever, are being pressed to operate sustainably. As blockchain technology continues to permeate across all industries, I'm intrigued and excited to understand what this technology can do to solve the challenge of sustainable growth. To start somewhere, I consolidated my view of what the Toucan Protocol is doing for the carbon offset and credit market (a foundational pillar to KlimaDAO's success). Rather than assessing the underlying technology (which has its own merits and is worth a separate discussion), I've focused on summarizing the pain points that Toucan's blockchain protocol solves in the diagram below. This representation doesn't address other topics such as whether carbon credits effectively support net-zero transition goals, or whether Carbon Registries need to evolve and innovate themselves (some registries still document and verify projects using outdated standards). The focus is on the primary problems the tech solves in this specific use case. I've narrowed it down to two important concepts that are enabled by blockchain technology: 1. Carbon Bridging: a process by which carbon offset credits can be traced (no double-counting), verified, and easily exchanged (smart-contracts) 2. Carbon Pools: a process by which carbon offset credits can be grouped and priced efficiently according to supply and demand for similar credits. They can also be turned into currency and used as an asset to earn interest or as collateral for a loan. (Decentralized Finance, DeFi) These concepts could be really interesting for large corporations looking to begin their "decarbonization" journeys. What if highly polluting businesses began investing on internal carbon-reduction projects knowing that Toucan Protocol can turn their projects into a monetizeable asset? Could this become an additional incentive to push companies into taking action? Reach out if you're interested to chat about the space! #innovation #sustainabilty #growth #blockchain #corporations
