It's an exciting time for the aerospace industry. As written in a recent edition of THE BRIDGE, we've not seen this level of activity and interest in space since the 1960s. One of the key trends that Deloitte identified in the aerospace and defense industry for 2024 is that industry spending is helping drive growth and innovation. From increased demand for passenger flights to advancements in emerging markets and a rise in new players, such as India's robotic probes flown in lunar and Martian orbits, there are many developments to keep an eye on. https://lnkd.in/eK2X8526

Is there really a chance that Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore will return to earth from the ISS unsuited? Some of us might be surprised to hear that the spacesuits used in Boeing and SpaceX aerospace vehicles are not "interoperable", meaning one type of suit will not work in the other vendor's spacecraft. Why would NASA choose to maintain a split fleet of flight equipment? Why would the government make such a silly decision knowing that over time it was highly likely that a vehicle from one vendor would graduate to non-mission capable status mid-mission? This was a conscious, deliberate decision made without these context-specific configuration management concerns in mind. Do these kinds of concerns introduce new requirements and stifle innovation by industry? That's a definite consideration for tradeoffs. Having flown in a few dozen military aircraft, I'm not shocked by this spacesuit snafu. Every stovepipe is its own fiefdom, and every product lead or program manager has their own incentives, many of which do not align with higher-level policy outside of their own immediate platform.

Thank you Airports International and Claudia Bacco for covering our experience with dual-use research – projects with both commercial and defense/public utility – to advance large-scale autonomous flight operations. "The company is involved in a number of major initiatives to test the true effectiveness of flight operations at large-scale, working with several key defence, research and commercial organisations. This is an opportunity to observe the absolute limits and capabilities of autonomous flight in real-world conditions and for some of the most demanding missions." This includes projects we've conducted with Air Force Research Laboratory, the Federal Aviation Administration, University of Alaska Fairbanks, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s WindMap Project with Oklahoma State University, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. These projects, stresses Vigilant Aerospace CEO Kraettli Lawrence Epperson, are just a few examples of the types of testing and research efforts that are currently underway and provide important foundations for the wider acceptance of uncrewed aircraft into national airspace. #FlightHorizon #aviationinnovation #AirspaceManagement #advancedairmobility https://lnkd.in/e2dTXzuH

Mk-II Aurora rocket-powered aircraft by Dawn Aerospace: A rapidly reusable spacecraft One of the biggest challenges to the commercialization of space remains relatively high launch costs. Dawn Aerospace’s Mk-II Aurora offers a solution to this problem by combining rocket-powered performance with the operational flexibility of an aircraft. Though still in the testing stages, the Aurora is designed to demonstrate rapid reusability, allowing it to complete multiple flights in one day. This is a key step toward making commercial space as accessible and efficient as commercial aviation. The Aurora’s innovative design allows it to take off from standard runways without requiring exclusive airspace, making it ideal for applications including atmospheric research, Earth observation, and microgravity experiments. As a technology demonstrator, it also serves as a foundation for development, perhaps one day proving that the sky is no longer the limit for runway-based flight. https://lnkd.in/dyFgw8-A

The United States Department of Defense is set to allocate nearly $7 billion for hypersonic programs in 2025. This substantial financial commitment highlights the strategic significance and urgency that the US attributes to the advancement of its hypersonic capabilities. Hypersonic technology signifies a revolutionary change in air warfare capabilities. In contrast to conventional missiles and aircraft, hypersonic systems are capable of traveling at speeds surpassing Mach 5, more than five times the speed of sound. HYPERBomber (TM), shown here, can exceed Mach 10+. The $7 billion investment in U.S. hypersonic programs is expected to be distributed among various initiatives that aim to enhance both offensive and defensive hypersonic capabilities. Although specific allocations might differ, the funding is anticipated to focus on the following principal areas: Research and Development (R&D): A considerable portion of the funds will be directed towards R&D efforts to expedite the advancement of hypersonic technologies, including propulsion systems, materials, and guidance systems. Prototyping and Testing: Funds will also be designated for the prototyping and extensive testing of hypersonic systems under conditions that simulate actual operations, to affirm their effectiveness and dependability. Infrastructure Upgrades: It is vital for the US to sustain a strong infrastructure to support hypersonic operations. Investments will be made to improve existing facilities and to create new test ranges and launch sites specifically for hypersonic testing. Collaborative Efforts: Given the intricate and interdisciplinary nature of hypersonic technology, the US will encourage collaboration with industry partners, academic circles, and allied nations to combine resources, knowledge, and skills. #hyperfast #HYPERIANAerospace #airsupremacy #NGAD #hypersonic #missiles #usnavy #airforce #usarmy #spaceforce #HYPERJet #HYPERMissile #HYPERBomber #HYPERLiner #hydrogen #aerospace #spaceflight #airsuperiority #NASA #BLACKSTAR
