Why be first when you could be last? Be the last employee… … who has to work without the support of an ERG. … who has to transition without support from HR. … to be told to hide their family while at work. … who has to advocate for supplier diversity. … to work without an active DEI department. … who has to take vacation days instead of parental leave. … who has to take unpaid leave instead of bereavement leave. … to be used as a token for their entire community. … to be told they are using the wrong bathroom. … to not bring their partner to the holiday party out of fear. … to be told they just “aren’t the right fit” for the promotion. … to live in fear of being outed at work. Are you a CHANGEMAKER?

✨✨Honoring Juneteenth: A Time for Reflection and Progress✨✨ Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, commemorates June 19, 1865, when slaves in Texas learned of their freedom—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Many organizations and communities observe this day with time off, parades, and celebrations. It’s a reminder of the progress made and the work still needed to create inclusive workplaces. Key Points: - Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the U.S. - Increasingly, companies recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday. - Transparency in diversity efforts is crucial for meaningful change. Let’s strive to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplaces and make a significant impact where everyone feels valued. #Juneteenth #DiversityAndInclusion #ReflectAndProgress #PositivelyU #TogetherWeRise #RuthsConsulting

Forensic Social Worker | PhD Student | Adjunct Professor | Board Member | Immigration Court Mental Health Consultant
Some strive to succeed, while many us strive to survive, and despite all odds and disparities, we have and continue to overcome. When I look at my scar on my head, what once was an insecurity of appearance and disability now is a daily reminder of my survival after being diagnosed and treated for a brain tumor, and my current experience living with a blood disease, all of which helped me find my purpose and passion for social work and community service. A civil rights activist once said “Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours (César Chávez, Mexican-American farmworker, labor leader and civil rights activist).” These are the very words that motivate me as a social worker in my roles as a research associate, PhD student, adjunct professor, and clinician and these are the words I pass onto my undergraduate/graduate students and fellow social workers, especially students & social workers of color who experience imposter syndrome or lost when working or attending predominantly white space.
