I help Main Contractors increase profits by providing effective cost control and advice | Chartered Quantity Surveyor | Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators

I unlearned everything I knew about Quantity Surveyors. Because most of it wasn't true: - Quantity Surveyors are just glorified bean counters. - They lack practical construction knowledge. - They are unnecessary middlemen. That's what people used to tell me. Years later (after becoming a chartered QS) I believe these simple truths: - QS's manage the costs, contracts, and risks of a project. - Many QS's have loads of on-site field knowledge. - They save money and avoid problems. Who's with me?

Joseph, the people that told you that about QS's originally clearly didn't know what they were talking about. The only thing that they highlighted was their own ignorance. I have heard this stuff before and just ignore it! 👍

I mostly agree. I’ve worked with QS’s where their knowledge is so high that they do what you’ve said and also impact operational decisions and strategies on site. For example, if you as a QS decide to get in a professional kerblaying company, even though the PM wanted to use general labourers who are slower and often mess it up. Whose running the operations of the scheme? Intelligent procurement IS strategic IS operations. That being said. There are some QS’s that sometimes look like their taking on more of passive admin role, and just accept everything the PM says and don’t impact actions and strategies on site. So everyone’s opinion of a QS is going to be very biased by the QS’s that they’ve worked with.
