3 typical things PhDs do that distort their value when applying to biotech jobs 𝟭) 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 Most companies already have their value proposition and R&D focus determined. They don't need you to come in and propose research topics based on your interests. Instead, talk about your skills. That's what employers care about. 𝟮) 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 When you say you're a problem solver, that does nothing to differentiate you among all of the other competition. Everyone at work is a problem solver, even if they don't have a PhD. Instead talk about specific technical skills that you can develop methods for, use, and troubleshoot independently. Examples - NGS, affinity chromatography, cell line development, media development/optimization 𝟯) 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱 When you're asked a question, pay attention to what is being asked. If it's a yes/no question, say "yes", "no", or "I don't know". Or if the question is asking for a list of things, provide a list of things. Don't tell a story unless they ask for one. If they do ask for a story, (ie "tell me about a time when...") practice bottom line up-front communication. Introduce the concise final result, then tell the story of how it happened. ---------- Work on the above skills and you'll be ahead of your competition. #biotech, #biotechjobs, #phd
