https://lnkd.in/e-tpZjtU #Grave ; not as the final resting place of bodily remains, but as a thing of consequence --- a depth in a sequence of events, a lapse in reasoning perhaps? This is the #18thChapter of an #AntiNovel that attaches many elements: people, words, music, -- oh, music. #TateMcRae #Grave --- this is the second time a Tate McRae has been used as a introductionary element.

https://lnkd.in/ezSQf9mf **Available now on bandcamp** Album Title Post-Orientalism Music Anthology Vol. 2: No To War by Various Artists https://lnkd.in/e2ch33AZ You can pre-order the full version in HD sound quality on the Bandcamp platform. === Post-Orientalism Statement "All of us are born into a catastrophe. The world is nothing but an endless waiting for the end." (Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot) "No to War" is not a whimsical slogan for us. This phrase is a bell that shatters solid walls and rouses the deaf from their deep slumber. "No to War" will commence with RDKPL and will be expanded weekly until the end of 2024. This collection will feature great thinkers and artists, each offering their interpretation of this outcry. This "No to War" is neither beautiful nor pleasing; we will not present it in a delightful package. It is a harsh and bitter truth—a raw scream that rejects all forms of sweetness and lays bare a bitter reality. We seek to transform a meaningless silence into a clear voice, etching a note upon the crumbling walls of war that cannot be ignored. In this endeavor, we return to a fundamental question: Can one say "no" in a world where war reigns, and will this "no" find its true meaning within itself? "Resistance is about building something that endures, even when everything is falling apart." (Alain Badiou) Post-Orientalism Community Sunday, October 6, 2024 === #NoToWar #PostOrientalism

😅 I'm preparing for a live performance that has me back-up singing and doing a piano solo on Friday night. 😅 AGAIN I ASK WHY I DO THIS TO MYSELF?!? Well, one of the reasons I like to give myself these challenges is because it's a little like the pressure my clients feel when they step in front of an audience. The piano solo worries me the most. So I'm practicing it over and over. And over. And over. (My kids are annoyed, but I ignore their protests. After those recorder concerts of Hot Cross Buns, they owe me.) If you've got something to say in front of a group this week, say the beginning out loud over and over. And over. (The beginning is when your body will be feeling the most nervous and uncomfortable). If you're starting with an anecdote, say that out loud in front of a mirror or in front of a cat, then escalate the pressure: send it to a friend as a voice message, or a video over an app like Marco Polo (I did that yesterday and nailed it!). As you get better, challenge yourself to get through it in one take. I take inspiration from so many, including this video the youtube algorithm just suggested to me. (I hate when it gets me so right). The chords Joni Mitchell is playing sound so complex to my ears, and her exquisite vocal performance on top of it....just 🤯. Every note seems perfect and effortless. She must have played it hundreds, maybe thousands of times between 1970 when she wrote it and this performance in 1983. First, maybe on her couch, then for friends, then for a few fans, then in front of an audience of thousands. That repetition is what makes it seem like it's so easy for her. Even if you don't feel comfortable being in the spotlight, someone needs your message. Joni was known for not loving the spotlight: "I never really wanted to be a star. I didn't like entering a room with all eyes on me. I still don't really like the attention of a birthday party. I prefer Christmas, which is everybody's holiday. It's just my nature." But sometimes we step up anyway. If that's you this week, give yourself a boost through the gift of repetition. On your couch, to your cat, then up the stakes. See if you can nail it in one. Thank you Joni, for capping off the Monday work day. Now, off to practice more. 🎹 #ConfidenceBuilding #SpeechCoaching #ExecutiveCoaching

This is a new song. It will likely be the title track for the next record. I have decided to experiment with different percussion and guitar styles. I'm introducing a wah pedal into the mix. These are stylistic choices I would have never made a few years ago. There's nothing new here in terms of using 1970s influences in modern music, but everybody's take is going to be different. Lyrics and titles for the songs I write can vary. They can be dense or sparse, depending on what a melody needs. From verbally packed, to a single sentence repeated throughout the whole song. Everything is instinctual. In the old days, I would overthink things to death. Now I trust myself, and try to honor my initial feelings about what I'm doing if they feel correct. This song is one of the sparer ones, but I try to make each phrase mean is much is possible in conjunction with one another. The title phrase probably was me having a moment of reflection on the finite amount of time I have left to accomplish what matters to me. I tried, in the song to look backwards, forwards, and describe the now. For some reason it felt right to let these phrases take up a lot of space in between each other. As you're listening to the music, they have time to drift from one thought to the next. It's not linear, but each of these snippets are about the perception of time. This is stuff that makes sense only after a life of experiences and feelings. It's a shorthand for deep thoughts. THis ENds Whatever happened to the mayor of Dogtown? What started out as an idea for a “David-Gilmour style” guitar solo in my head somehow morphed into a string piece that, after a few days of tweaking and tinkering, ultimately became this: my first string quartet. Despite my tenure as a violinist in 4th grade school orchestra, I’m not super familiar with string notation, so would love to hear what people think, especially string players. Do I need to include bowings and other articulations, etc.? Also, man, has the sound of MIDI come a LONG way in the past 20 years! Also also, the main pressing question is: what do I do with this now? For people who have experience publishing music online, what settings, permissions, etc. are you comfortable with? https://lnkd.in/ee5qUsD9

Inspiration. For a long time, I’ve had a method for generating "ideas." I’ve learned how my mind works. I need movement and music. Taking long drives while listening to music that stirs emotions tends to spark ideas. It gives me solutions to my creative challenges. This particular song, by David Gilmour and his daughter Romany, has that effect on me. The perfection of purity, simplicity elevated to the level of a masterpiece. How could one not be moved? And being moved, feeling emotions, sets me in motion, giving me the urge to express them. movement+music = emotions = ideas It’s actually quite simple for me. But It's coming on various ways, depending how your mind is set.

Meanwhile, it's very much a part of human nature to seek similarities among phenomena rather than focusing on differences, laying the groundwork for change. Sometimes, this inclination is justified, especially when attempting such comparisons seems unimaginable. Take, for instance, the question: What similarities exist between Opera and Jazz? Instead of assuming there are none, consider how George #Gershwin made an attempt to reconcile these two genres with his creation, "Porgy and Bess." What makes "Porgy and Bess" somewhat similar to #jazz is its incorporation of jazz elements into the operatic form. Gershwin infused the score with blues, jazz, and spiritual influences, creating a uniquely American sound. The opera features syncopated rhythms, improvisational passages, and harmonic progressions reminiscent of jazz music. Additionally, the characters often sing in a conversational, idiomatic style that reflects the vernacular language of the time. While "Porgy and Bess" is not a traditional jazz work, its fusion of operatic and jazz elements makes it a notable example of how these two genres can intersect and influence each other. I have such a wide taste in music. Like seriously, if we've never talked music, we should. This live performance by Black Sabbath from 1970 is so amazing. Thanks to Greg Dohler for bringing it up in conversation over lunch today. Greg's a great photographer and friend, and it was great to commiserate about this awesome performance. What does this have to do with business? Black Sabbath was panned by the critics of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Rolling Stone said they were "Like Cream! But worse." But watch this film, and you'll see that from a performance point of view, they're amazing. They were operating on a different level and totally misunderstood by the prevailing opinions. Isn't that our dream as business owners? To press beyond, to be on the cutting edge of our industry? To innovate and grow? Final thought: if my dream as a business owner had a soundtrack, I'd definitely want Bill Ward playing the drums. Good gravy!
