White supremacist culture perpetuates that you have to get something to give something. It assumes that information and content shared have to be tied to clear deliverables and that outcomes operate by a clear set of criteria that often act as an obstacle instead of an accelerator. Sometimes, sharing a story and driving a narrative is an outcome in itself. Shout out to Jon Kraus for amplifying my essay "To the Young Black Fundraiser". There was a comment in his post regarding intelligent action and how we see content all the time but "nothing changes". Networking allows individuals and business owners to connect with one another, creating a web of relationships that can lead to mutual growth and success. Through these connections, people can share knowledge, resources, and opportunities that might otherwise be inaccessible. Collaboration is the natural progression from networking. When businesses and individuals work together, they can combine their strengths to achieve common goals. Collaborative efforts often result in innovative solutions, improved services, and the successful completion of projects that benefit the entire community. Supporting local businesses is crucial for the economic health of a community. Address pay inequity. Use this month to solve the pay inequity at your organization. 2. Rally for DEI. At a minimum, continue to champion DEI initiatives at your organization. 3. Give. Donate monthly to organizations that center Black wellbeing. 4. Don't view Black people as a monolith. That means intentionally centering the stories and experiences of those most marginalized, like our Black trans community, Black disabled people, Black people directly impacted by our criminal legal system, darker-skinned Black folks, neurodiverse Black folks, and the intersections of race and other marginalized identities. 5. Rally. Change isn’t created in silence. 6. Pay reparations. On an individual level, pay it forward to creators you learn from on social media or organizers in your community. 7. Celebrate Black History Month throughout the year. The calendar might mark the occasion, but Black people deserve recognition and support 24/7, 365.

“How to Think about Supporting Black Business Differently,” offers reflections and approaches for effectively supporting Black-owned businesses. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the unique challenges and opportunities they face. The racial wealth gap in the United States continues to widen, presenting a persistent challenge despite decades of efforts to mitigate it. At its core lies the disparity in household wealth and asset ownership, particularly in historically low-income communities. While entrepreneurship has long been celebrated as a means to generate wealth, create jobs, and sustain local economies, black entrepreneurs in disinvested communities often face systemic barriers that hinder their access to essential resources. For our customers outside of the U.S., Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in America. It marks the day, June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers enforced Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in Texas. Despite the progress made since then, systemic racism, inequities, and unconscious bias continue to affect our communities. Here are some meaningful ways you can spend this day: 1) Spend a few minutes educating a friend, family member, or coworker about Juneteenth, its history, and why it’s celebrated. 2) Discover and support Black-owned businesses in your community or online. 3) Donate to charities and sign petitions that fight against systemic racism. 4) Watch movies or read books that bring awareness to racial inequalities in your community. 5) Find and follow Black musicians, authors, painters, poets, dancers, etc. on social media. 6) Check your local newspaper or newsletters for events celebrating Juneteenth to learn more and connect with others.
