💢 Part Time Social Work "Doesn't work" 💢 It makes no sense that with the constant need for social workers all year round and we aren't offering more part-time roles. Surely, filling two part-time positions is better than leaving vacancies unfilled. 😤 I’m currently working with a social worker who has 6 years of post-qualified experience and is eager to join a frontline team. However, they need a part-time role (3 days a week) due to childcare commitments. 🤔 Why aren't we embracing this flexible working approach more widely? Our communities deserve the best support possible, and experienced professionals willing to work part-time can significantly contribute to this goal. ❗ I know I am not part of a Social Work team and I do not claim to have all knowledge of the sector, but I do know I have some fantastic parents / family carers that are expereinced Social Workers who are ready to help the lives of Children. 💪 If anyone is going through this or have an opinion, please share! 🌐 If you're a Team Manager or Service Manager who is open to taking on someone part time, I would love to hear from you. #PartTime #WorkingMums #SocialWork #ParentsInSocialWork

I've been working on a few things in order to promote more part time opportunities; not just the usual flexible / hybrid working here at South Gloucestershire Council. We've a number of recent appointments who are part time, either in staggered weeks (saving on childcare and commuting costs) or overlapping part time job shares - the continuity of service delivery and most importantly, relationship and trust built with service users is the biggest area that needs to be thought through by employers. I have a few more roles going live shortly for part time workers across most areas of practice as a lot more managers have the mindset that we can and do make this work better for all that require part time - from parents, carers, single parents or just those with a wise to have a better work life balance. So keep your eyes peeled.

During the covid lockdown, I managed a team for a short term social work a and i team. It was staffed entirely by part time workers, predominantly parents but also some staff who had other part time roles in teaching/therapy. It was an amazing success: it brought back highly experienced staff who had stepped back due to having children, it offered staff the possibility to have other work opportunities/ interests so I had an amazingly skilled and diverse team- this decreases burnout and allows people to remain doing frontline work and have other career opportunities rather than believe they have to progress into management to advance their career. It worked really well because we were allowed to manage how the work was carried out, how the team would ensure cover and we could break away from a lot of the restrictions which create barriers to flexible working. We always had someone available during working hours for new referrals, professional conversations/ mtgs etc but much of our practice with families took place in the evenings and even on saturdays. Allowing practitioners to be more flexible with their working hours allowed them to be more flexible with clients too. Such a shame there isn't more of this promoted

One could argue having a team of part time workers could reduce burnout... Surely sharing the burden of a busy caseload across two workers in a job share or Pod would not only improve working conditions but also increase retention among frontline workers

The number of skilled social workers I have spoken to in the past who have left social work because they have struggled to find a part-time role to work around their little ones is crazy.

Job sharing would reduce vacancies massively!! Surely more people have realised this by now? 🤔
