“One of the major dilemmas inherent in the attempt by Black people to break through the cultural aspects of white imperialism is that posed by the use of historical knowledge as a weapon in our struggle. We are virtually forced into the invidious position of proving our humanity by citing historical antecedents; and yet the evidence is too often submitted to the white racists for sanction. The white man has already implanted numerous historical myths in the minds of black peoples; and those have to be uprooted . . . It is necessary to direct our historical activity in the light of two basic principles[:] Firstly, the effort must be directed solely towards freeing and mobilising black minds. There must be no performances to impress whites, for those whites who find themselves beside us in the firing line will be there for reasons far more profound than their exposure to African history. Secondly, the acquired knowledge of African history must be seen as directly relevant but secondary to the concrete tactics and strategy which are necessary for our liberation. There must be no false distinctions between reflection and action . . . How America was built on slavery: Those roots can still be felt today American capitalism was built on the backs of slaves and the slave economy — and not just in the South. Some of these practices are still with us.  Historian Calvin Schermerhorn explains how slavery built America without returning virtually any of the gains to the enslaved people — or their descendants. He also describes how racial inequality is part of our national DNA and why it persists.  Schermerhorn is a professor of history in ASU’s School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies, and the author of four books on the history of slavery in the U.S., including “Unrequited Toil: A History of United States Slavery. Juneteenth marks the end of chattel slavery in the United States in 1865, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The delayed realization of emancipation for so many is a painful reminder of how the promise of freedom has too often been denied for Black Americans throughout our nation's history. Reflecting on #Juneteenth and the ugly reality of slavery in American History. Black Americans have faced impossible odds and relentless injustices. We cannot deny the stain of slavery on our history but we can be proud that the rights that we have in this country were fought for, they were not handed down by a benevolent ruling class. A quote from Toni Morrison keeps ringing in my head today: The function of freedom is to free someone else. What can you do to help free others? Who have you not invited to the table? Whose voices can you amplify? Are you listening to the folks who are greiving an America who has not lived up to her promise of liberty for everyone? With freedom comes responsibility to push the arc of American history towards justice.

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Recognized as a federal holiday, Juneteenth is a time to honor African American history and culture, reflect on the journey toward equality, and celebrate resilience and progress. Juneteenth is more than just a historical date; it’s a celebration of freedom, culture, and progress, emphasizing the importance of equality and justice for all.
