How can we use our landscapes to improve flood resilience? It’s a question we cannot answer without involving those owning and managing land. To help upscale nature-based solutions, we advise (and can also deliver) on what works where, based on the unique requirements of the land and in many cases – the farm business it supports. That’s why we’ve created a natural flood management toolkit that takes the confusion out of the many different interventions that could work for farmers and landowners in the Midlands. For each one, the toolkit provides clear information on design, set-up costs and the long-term management needs of the measure, so that landowners can see what could work for them, whether that is on arable, horticultural or grassland.  The toolkit has been made possible, thanks to the partnership between Aviva and WWF-UK to build more climate resilient ecosystems to help reduce the risk of climate-related natural disasters and create wider benefits for people. Excited to learn NOAA is phasing in the next generation of high-resolution land cover data for the nation’s coastal areas! The new data product is 900 times more detailed than the previous generation of land cover maps. High-resolution land cover data helps flood modelers more accurately simulate how water will flow across the landscape. It can also help municipalities more accurately assess pervious and impervious for the stormwater utility, and wetland scientists and planners evaluate the future resilience of salt marshes.

While our high-land-value cities may be able to adapt with flood mitigation strategies, the vast lower-land-value landscapes will inevitably face managed retreat... It's exciting to see the experiment in managed retreat in England's Steart Marshes on the Times website today, and all the ecological and carbon benefits from restoring large-scale salt marshes... Anna Cardinal, Joshua Nemser-Sher, Emily Strand, and Megan Beaulieu have won the 2024 Kelman Award from the Central States Water Environment Association! The award honors a paper the team wrote titled “Koshkonong Creek Watershed Flood Control,” which was published in the fall 2023 issue of Central States Water Magazine. The paper details an innovative design to reduce flooding, enhance sustainability, and improve community well-being in the Koshkonong watershed through the construction of a weir, embankment, flood basin, and recreational park. By integrating flood management infrastructure with recreational facilities and environmental restoration efforts, this project pushes the boundaries of flood control design, maximizing positive impacts for both the community and the environment. #BadgerEngineers #UWMadison #CivilEngineering #EnvironmentalEngineering

The Environment Agency has unveiled a new #map based #digital tool to support the shoreline management of England’s coasts - the Shoreline Management Plan Explorer will enable local planners and coastal practitioners to find the information they need more easily, and to help the agency monitor the risks of flooding and erosion. It is also available to the public to promote understanding of the risks of coastal flooding and erosion, along with the management approaches and actions being taken. https://lnkd.in/eAraaSy2
