With NOAA Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, we are making strides in how we identify the most suitable locations for offshore wind farms.
We use a detailed process that integrates advanced spatial modeling with input from diverse stakeholders across Tribal, federal, state, and local entities, as well as industry and conservation organizations.
In the Gulf of Maine, we carefully selected 8 areas for a potential lease sale, which represent only 10% of the initial Call Area acreage. In identifying these areas, BOEM prioritized avoidance of North Atlantic right whales, offshore fishing grounds, and vessel transit routes, while supporting the region’s offshore wind energy goals.
Check out our latest communication tool, in collaboration with Bureau of Ocean Energy Management: an interactive StoryMap exploring offshore wind energy siting in the Gulf of Maine!
