There are many pros and cons to the movements towards AI and Centralizing as it removes the jobs, people, and relationship building from many areas of operations.

This dehumanization allows organizations to proceed with decisions that have devastating impacts and little to no accountability. Remember Erin Brockovich? She didn’t just win a case; she humanized it. By knowing each of her 600 plaintiffs by name, she transformed numbers into faces, making it impossible for PG&E to ignore their accountability. We must see beyond spreadsheets and statistics. Every number has a name, a story, and a family. We need to recognize and address the human impact of our decisions. This past May, I moderated a CLE panel discussing business and legal issues in the video game industry, including the significant changes and layoffs within this space. A SAG-AFTRA strike is the last thing the video game industry needs. All actors (and industry talent) are right to protect themselves from the unauthorized use and potential abuse of AI on their careers. SAG-AFTRA made a good start in waking up studio executives to the new realities of Hollywood and Silicon Valley. This is an excellent example of #HumanizingHumanCapital: In an attempt to appear more transparent and compassionate, large employers like The Walt Disney Company and Wells Fargo are implementing what is being called the "long goodbye." Essentially, workers are given advance notice of their layoffs, which can happen a month or more in advance, allowing them to find alternative work and/or retrain. What a shift from the "leave on the spot" escort by security! Thoughts about this approach? Deadline is told that the outfit has kicked off a consultation process in at least the UK and Canada, which could see an exodus of around 5% of DNEG’s circa-10,000-strong global workforce. DNEG had not responded to comment requests by press time. Layoffs are understood to be somewhat concentrated within R&D teams and are a response to the challenged market, which has not eased up since the Hollywood strikes ended and has not improved sufficiently after DNEG brought in a pay offer for staff last year. Texas associate layoffs/stealth layoffs are happening. They affect different firms and practice areas, including litigation, corporate, and real estate. Some are in Dallas, some in Houston. Juniors and seniors with the majority in the class of 2021 and 2022. Based on the calls I've received, it's all due to a lack of work. For the last six months, all were billing less than 80 hours a month. It's perplexing to see such an odd market. Some firms have associates billing 200 a month right now in M&A, and some firms have associates with less than 50 hours in May. Some firms have been slammed in litigation while others you would not expect are DEAD. While I generally do not represent laid-off associates (sometimes a recruiter can hurt your chances if unemployed so always discuss that with your recruiter), I'm always happy to chat and give market advice. I'm thinking of you if you are in this situation. Good luck to all. I'm ready for the market to stabilize. I'm hoping for Q4 2024, but it could be Q1 2025.

To those of you looking for work after rounds of layoffs in the gaming world, I value your work. Thousands do. They may not know you by name, but your efforts have given them places of freedom, joy, discovery and exhilaration in dark times and hard days. Creatives and those working on "non essential" things, you are performing a very human act of resilience, perhaps what defines us most. You are doing more than just surviving, By doing so, you are making places in life which exist for that "more than survival" in others. What you make (or help produce): art, music, performance, games... is a space to express life beyond mere toil and need. It is the flower springing up from pavement. Art helps us rise up when the world knocks us down. That is essential enough to me.

They say money isn't important but we say everything important to you takes money. Because of that belief, we know employment has been a barrier for individuals looking for a second chance as a First Class citizen. Personally, both of our coaches Dallas and Trinese experienced layoffs, no hire, and more because of their backgrounds.
