Each interaction, whether it's a routine procedure or a critical operation, profoundly impacts the person involved. We must see beyond the clinical details and recognize the individual at the heart of every treatment. Every patient represents a unique story and individual challenges. It's essential to acknowledge their humanity, especially in moments of vulnerability. Understanding and empathy are key. Imagine being in the patient's or a family member's shoes—this perspective should guide our actions. Alleviating fears isn’t just part of the job; it’s part of showing we care, understanding the emotional journey patients undergo as they face health challenges. The impact of friendship and community cannot be overstated. Community is fundamental. It is the key to negotiating perilous times through support and shared experiences. With a strong community, anything is possible. When doubts arise, as they inevitably do, a community can provide an invaluable sounding board of encouragement and reality checks. And when our own internal beliefs aren’t up to the task, we can borrow the beliefs we have in each other to keep us moving forward. And let’s be honest, having a group of people you can relate to and who get what you’re going through is just nice. Physicians are entrenched in community throughout our training, but the camaraderie all but disappears as we reach attendinghood. Community may just be one of the most significant missing pieces for physicians in modern-day medicine that drives physician burnout, overwhelm, and overall discontent. Who is your community? Empathy vs. Sympathy: Do You Know the Difference? Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, truly understanding and sharing their emotions. On the other hand, sympathy involves feeling sorrow for someone, sometimes to the extent of taking on their emotions yourself. While sympathy is a compassionate trait, it may not always be the most constructive approach. Why Empathy Matters Developing empathy is crucial. It's a valuable skill that can help you remain calm, view situations from another’s perspective, and, most importantly, make others feel heard and understood. We love LifeStance Health 💙 🧠 As a #BehavioralHealth optimization partner I work with Behavioral Health facilities all over the country, including #virtualproviders and #digitalplatforms However, I know from #PERSONALexperience, and I'll share transparently, everyone in my family sees a counselor. We have all experienced a great deal of #trauma over the last few years (not even including the pandemic) and we work individually and together to assure our #mentalwellness including: my husband, my 17 year old son, and my 15 year old daughter! 👨👩👦👦 🎯 Lifestance has always been transparent, upfront on costs, and accesible to providers! 📊 We actually utilized another digital platform, a competitor of Lifestance, recently, to explore options. *It's important to shop providers and programs to indentify what is most successful and beneficial to your wellness... The new digital paltofrm we picked was awesome too - our son loved it and saw great benefits. However, through a 15 week program we were NEVER connected with a psychiatric provider! An amazing counselor, yes, but not the Psychiatric provider we were told we'd be seeing. After our son had completed the program, in a post treatment survey I mentioned that we were never connected with a provider and although they apologized they admitted that they didn't have any psychiatric providers in their network!!! They did refer us out to a provider down the street, which is fine, the other, local provider is great, but we chose (and paid for) the (comprehensive) digital program, under the understanding that Psychiatric evaluation was apart of the program. My point in many ways is two-fold: What is advertised isn't always real - check in on what you're investing in.
