Hyundai Motor and Kia have made a significant development in car technology with the unveiling of their new Active Air Skirt. This innovative technology has resulted in a 2.8% improvement in efficiency, allowing the car to travel an additional 6 km on the same amount of energy. The Active Air Skirt reduces the air resistance faced by vehicles, especially in electric vehicles, by controlling the tyre vortex and subsequent wake. It is fascinating to see how similar devices in Formula 1 cars have (possibly) inspired this innovation. As the CFD image shows ( credits to D. Penner) the F1 solution is far more elegant altough controlling just part of the tyre wake. It does not use any moving parts and just dance with energy and vortices. Definetly there is more incoming energy in a F1 car at full speed than EV car, that is why they need such big device (I am sure we will see optimizations in that part of the vehicle) . #HyundaiMotor #Kia #ActiveAirSkirt #ElectricVehicles #Aerodynamics #Innovation
