Why are Elon Musk and Tesla continuing to delay their Society of Automobile Engineers certified Level Three semi-autonomous vehicle technology, also known as Full Self Driving (FSD)? European Competitors, like BMW's Personal Pilot, and Mercedes-Benz's Drive Pilot, have already introduced their Level Three semi-autonomous vehicle technology into the consumer marketplace. In my opinion, with Tesla's FSD it must be one of two issues or a combination of both. The United States Department of Transportation is currently investigating the efficacy of FSD, which has prompted some limited government recalls to fix certain issues. Plus, Teslas with FSD engaged have been known not to successfully recognize Police or Emergency Vehicles when parked alongside roads, resulting in rear-ending accidents. Therefore, Tesla must immediately increase its overall abilities to improve the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Neural Network components that comprise the brain of FSD to ensure safety and on-road performance. Elon Musk has promised to deliver Level 3 FSD each year since 2020. Tesla To Unveil Robotaxi on 8/8 - According To Elon Musk Directly Posting On X Elon Musk posts directly on X that there will be a Tesla Robotaxi unveil on 8/8. This is in only 4 months and comes after a controversial article from Reuters about Tesla's compact car being cancelled. Elon Musk Shares Robotaxi Unveil Date Tesla is going to unveil their robotaxi on 8/8/2024 this year and there is a lot of buzz and enthusiasm around this announcement, amid the controversy that Tesla is scrapping it's $25,000 compact car (which Elon has vehemently denied). This announcement comes at a time when Tesla's FSD software, which is touted to one day, allow vehicles to drive autonomously without a driver, is starting to gain traction and attention do to the significant progress being made. An interesting article, essentially a review of the recent Tesla recall after investigation by the U.S. NHTSA, with various complaints about the software update process and results but the criticism seems warranted based on the experience: https://lnkd.in/gicsmFyf Here is a key line "Tesla got to drive what went into the software update — and it appears not to want to alienate some customers by imposing new limits on its tech." Claiming a safety recall was retarded to limit changes in customer driving experience is bold (but not unfounded based on the reported experience.) Why is this significant? 1. Automobiles are becoming consumer electronic devices with software features marketed against each other more than horsepower and torque. 2. Updates to driver assistance software will increase as the field matures. Multiply the number of vendors by the number of features in a developing field...expect more commentary on recall effectiveness in future years. 3. How can the public understand software recalls and be confident in their resolution? The customer experience around traditional hardware recalls can be nerve-wracking but also offer a sense of relief or closure once a vehicle returns from the dealer as 'fixed'. Reading the WaPo article I realized I am not clear on Tesla's feature nomenclature and wouldn't understand the impact on an owner in my family. Here's my shot to explain the recall with a loved one in mind. The recall targets the 'Autosteer' functionality (stay in your lane even as curves appear) within the 'Autopilot' software suite, which is a free-level of software separate from Tesla's paid "Enhanced Autopilot' and 'Full Self-Driving' Beta (FSD) products. You might have read about a functionality called 'Navigate on Autopilot' but that's not part of the basic 'Autopilot' and may create a sense of confusion. You can digest the Tesla product nomenclature rats nest here: https://lnkd.in/gd59-JcV Going back to the recall, within 'Autosteer' investigators found a) software did not monitor effectively that drivers were paying attention to the road. An example of this monitoring includes placing hands regularly on the steering wheel. - Remember videos with Tesla drivers hanging weights on their steering wheels - that was to trick the software into thinking a human was actively driving. b) software could be activated outside the recommended environment of "controlled access highways". Autopilot relies on lane paint to function effectively and many city streets can have irregular lane paint. These findings might sound familiar if you are a Consumer Reports reader, they hinted at this in their 2020 review, summarized here (https://lnkd.in/g968DxNQ) I don't envy the Contact Center workers tasked with educating curious owners, good luck!

Reading about this, there was this connection we've made with that scene from the movie Leave the World Behind, streaming now on Netflix, when tens of Tesla cars self drive crushing into one another due to a mass cyber-attack... https://lnkd.in/e7nkuM9f This time, the world's dominant electric vehicles car maker calls more than 2 mil vehicles "to update a function designed to ensure drivers are focused when using its Autopilot feature". When the actual human is driving, focus is definitely required. When you switch to Autopilot the driver also needs to stay focused. Also, the required update will be free for all Tesla car owners.
