📕‘Who am I?’: Professional identity in mature outdoor professionals By Peter White & Matt Groves 🔓 Open Access publication The study aims to unpack how outdoor experts become the professionals they are. The findings suggest that they construct their own unique identities that incorporate common characteristics of what they see an outdoor professional to be. It is proposed that outdoor professional identities emerge through a process of doing, watching, and belonging. This raises implications regarding the training and development of future outdoor professionals and how the drawing together of outdoor professional bodies may bring coherence to the sectors’ identity and promote future career prospects to aspiring outdoor professionals. https://lnkd.in/e5dQ8HSz

A few quick observations on the experience of taking a child on a fieldwork trip: https://lnkd.in/e4JwpamD The highlights: - it was a great experience! Highly recommend if the place you’re going is in your estimation safe and is logistically manageable; - little kids see things adults, especially experienced researchers, tend to tune out over time. Being forced to ‘see’ these things in detail again is a good thing; - there’s still a huge gender gap in who takes kids on fieldwork, and the impact this has on productivity. If you’re an institutional leader, make it financially easier to take kids - pay for more stuff and pay for it up front. If you’re a man, take the initiative. Don’t wait for your wife or partner to suggest it. Make a plan, do the work to get everything in place, and go.

What’s my WHY⁉️ In 2018 I volunteered at a Veterans homeless Stand Down, and ran into a person I was stationed with 12 years earlier…unfortunately they were enrolled in HUDVASH and weren’t one of the other volunteers.

Denmark is currently facing a paradox: while there is a high demand for skilled talent across various industries, a significant number of people, including internationals, struggle to find employment. Nikolaj Lubanski, COO of Copenhagen Capacity—an organization that invests in and promotes the economic development of Greater Copenhagen, discusses the challenges, opportunities, and potential solutions for integrating international talent in Denmark’s labor market. We have a lot of skilled people, and companies are shouting for more talent. To improve the situation, we need to do several things now. First, we need places like TechBBQ; we need meeting spots where those who need people can meet them in a slightly different way than at an open career fair. That’s why, when we do matchmaking events, we often pre-screen candidates to ensure the company meets the right people. Second, there is a lack of networks open to internationals. Many international networks create a bubble, but the meeting places should allow them to connect with Danes and build a broader network. Some unions are doing this, but more can be done. Third, companies need to be more open and willing to embrace diversity. They must be ready to say, “Okay, maybe we can’t get precisely the profile we want, but this person can offer a different perspective.” Full story: https://lnkd.in/dzmmF7Gs

Success Coach | Speaking Coach | I help business people over 40 take courageous action toward their goals so they can enjoy success on their own terms.
Two Simple Words For Mother's Day today, I wanted to post something meaningful and appropriate for a platform like this. My search uncovered this brief story taken from Reader's Digest. I want to share it with you. "On the first day of first grade, I stood by the front door with butterflies in my stomach. I voiced my biggest concern to my mother: “How will I make friends?” Crouching in front of me, she handed me advice I carry with me to this day: “Be Switzerland.” Be friends with everyone. Treat everyone equally and fairly. For all of my 20 years, I have lived by these words. Soon I will graduate and become a part of the real world. And on that first day, nervously facing new responsibilities, I know I will whisper two words to myself: “Be Switzerland.” —Abigail Wortman, West Long Branch, New Jersey" In today's world of differing opinions and vociferous dissent, this is sage advice. Let's treat everyone equally and fairly. This is a formidable task yet reading this short story gives me hope that each of us could take one small step in this direction. Happy Mother's Day. #MothersDay #BeFair #PersonalDevelopment #Relationships

Just finished my 2d season teaching a seminar on “Surprising Psychology of Meaningful Work” at Chautauqua Institution (CHQ.org). Class participants ranged from those in college, to mid-career, to nearly/semi/fullyretired— engineers, lawyers, clergy, I.T. geeks. A key message: it’s not just what you do; it’s whether whatever you do, taps into any of a dozen underlying drivers of meaning and motivation, as explored in “Wellsprings of Work: Surprising Sources of Meaning & Motivation.” Www.WellspringsofWork.com.
