Thalidomide is a therapeutic option for patients with β-thalassemia by increasing fetal hemoglobin and thereby reducing the requirement for blood transfusions. However, information on changes in erythropoiesis and iron homeostasis during thalidomide treatment is lacking. This study investigated the effects of thalidomide treatment on hematologic, erythropoietic, and iron-status parameters in patients with transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT).

In order to use the calculations for AKI Alerts (Acute Kindey Injury), eGFR and KFRE (Kidney Failure Risk Equation) there is a requirement to use Enzymatic methods for creatinine (NICE NG203, and others). However just over 30% of UK laboratories still use the outdated Jaffe colourimetrimetric assay.
It is GIRFT’s target to ensure that all English Pathology Departments in England use the enzymatic method by the end of 2024; many countries have already converted.
@NHSGIRFT Pathology are working with @UKNEQAS to facilitate the conversion. We are speaking to manufacturers and labs to meet the 2024 creatinine challenge. We ask that pathology laboratories prepare for local conversion through internal discussion and discussion with their suppliers.
