Are you based in the United States near the USC? The USC Pacific Asia Museum may be worth a visit to review for the JPH. As a museum dedicated entirely to the Pacific Asia world, USC PAM is uniquely positioned to help expand visitors’ understanding of historical and cultural contexts of the artworks displayed in our galleries and special exhibitions. Our museum focuses on representation of the incredible diversity of Asia and the Pacific Islands and their diasporas in each of our special exhibitions. Through object selection, didactics, and further contextual elements, the goal of our exhibitions is to instill curiosity and create meaningful insight for visitors to see the complexity of Asian art and culture and to connect to the contexts and meanings behind the artworks displayed. Because of this effort, visitors have the opportunity to expand their understanding of an incredibly important, yet often misunderstood, part of the world. Visitors also have the opportunity to find connections to their own unique experiences and interests by exploring our museum’s offerings> https://buff.ly/3Xo4BAb If you would like to write a review of an exhibition here, or another like it, contact the Journal of Pacific History Media, Film and Exhibitions Editors Chris Ballard and Leah Lui-Chivizhe, at editorial[@]jphinc.com.au to arrange a review submission. Did you know? For two years, France used a 10-hour clock 🤔 During the French Revolution, from 1793 to 1795, the system was introduced to simplify time mathematics. How it worked: ➡️ The day was divided into 10 hours ➡️ Each hour was divided into 100 minutes ➡️ Each minute was divided into 100 seconds ➡️ Midnight was 00:00 and noon was 5:00 The 10-hour time system proved to be unpopular and caused challenges with international relations. Today, you can see examples of decimal clocks and pocket watches from the time in the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris and in the British Museum. #timekeeping #historyoftime

I learned yesterday that my Monograph on the History of the Museum of London will get a paperback version in August; 31,99GBP being much cheaper than the hardback (and more bendy, so easier to scribble your notes in): https://lnkd.in/e_QZdcA5. I really enjoyed writing this book, and given the charged and febrile public discourse around museums and their social role, I think it remains an important read for anyone interested in how museums (and other cultural institutions) approach, for example, decolonisation, or social justice in a contemporary context. Research on the history of museums and other cultural institutions is important as it helps us to understand key debates such as decolonization, restitution, representation of marginalized groups, and evolving museum functions. And, understanding museums' historical relationships with empire is crucial for critically evaluating practices, and reimagining their societal roles. This historical perspective provides insights into how museums have shaped cultural narratives, reinforced power dynamics, and produced knowledge over time. It informs efforts to make museums more inclusive and responsive to contemporary needs, addresses ongoing power imbalances in cultural representation, and enriches public debates about cultural heritage and national identity. And, by the time you have finished my monograph, my edited collection (which I am editing with my colleague Dr Matthew Jones), Museums, Empire and Decolonial Praxis, due to be published by Routledge in 2025, will be available for you to read 😅

How can museums build a just future? AAM's Voluntary Repatriation, Restitution, and Reparations project brings together a diverse group of writers to envision possible futures for repatriation and restitution. The resulting collection includes opinion pieces, predictions of where current trends and events might lead us in the future, and fiction that immerses readers in these possible futures. We hope to inspire change and empower museums to disrupt outdated practices with these visions of potential futures. 📖 Read the Next Horizon papers collection: https://lnkd.in/eu7Pztsm

What is a museum, really? 🤔 The ICOM says it’s a “permanent institution in the service of society… fostering diversity and sustainability… accessible, inclusive, and participatory.” The Museums Association says it’s a place for “Inspiration, learning, and enjoyment… holding collections in trust for society.” A recent 5-star reviewer of the Natural History Museum said it’s “a fascinating and awe-inspiring place…the perfect spot for both a fun and education experience”. After reading so much about museums, it’s got me curious… And now I’m asking LOADS of questions about it: Is there a limit to the size of a museum? (Could I create a “museum” in a shoebox? Could a city itself be classed as a museum?) Where does a museum’s “status” start and stop? What if a digital museum is down for maintenance—does it stop being a museum for that time? And where do the boundaries lie between a museum and an archive? (Hoping someone in my network can help with this one!) And then there's the old-school vs. new-school approach to museums—do we prioritise preservation or the public experience? How does that affect the definition of a museum? I’d love to hear what you think! 🏛️ #MuseumDebate #Museums #Heritage #Curator
