#RecommendedPaper One key element to design and deliver meaningful patient and public involvement (#PPI) in the one related to the language that we use. Health literacy can be a barrier when we consider that patients can understand and communicate with the same way that professionals with scientific background. PPI experts and facilitators should have the responsability to design PPI activities not only based in the right methodology according to the age of the patients and the expected outcomes (e.g. suitability of a clinical trial design, co-creation of educational materials, etc.), but also in regards to the suitable language of patients. In this paper, my colleague Jenny Preston, with Sally-Anne Dews, Rachel Daley, Akhil Bansal and Natalie Bohm, have analyzed peer-reviewed and gray literature on how language is used in communication between healthcare researchers and patients. Still we have a lot to learn, to ensure that PPI activities are meaningful and based in a social scientific approach. Thanks for this great work! #AlwaysReading, #AlwaysLearning Access to the paper: https://lnkd.in/dqZx2i3d #PatientEngagement #PatientInvolvmenet #ClinicalResearch #ClinicalTrials #ChildrenRights #PatientRights

I teach freelance medical writers how to launch and grow a specialist continuing medical education (CME) writing business. Author, educator, and host of the Write Medicine podcast.
What hurdles do you encounter when crafting a convincing needs assessment and grant proposal? In the latest episode of Write Medicine, Nathalie Turner, MS, ELS, and I discuss the challenges in compiling compelling needs assessments. As she explains, one common challenge is working in a brand new area without existing outcomes data. In these situations, you need to find alternative ways to provide good data to justify the gaps. This might involve creating surveys for clinicians or consulting with thought leaders in the field. Relying solely on medical literature data often yields less convincing results.
