How can clinicians ethically integrate psychedelic medicines when treating mental health? That question is at the core of a consensus report published in June by JAMA Network Open. The answers were developed during a 2023 multidisciplinary meeting of experts and interested parties, who came to a consensus on 20 key points across five ethical issues. I was honored to represent ORTUS Foundation at this 2.5-day meeting. This is both a hopeful and crucial moment in the history of mental health. Clinicians and policymakers must take the challenges ahead seriously. We must also keep focus on the rich cultural histories and traditions that inform contemporary medical uses of psychedelic medicines.
