May is #MentalHealth Awareness Month, and this Psychology Today article from Kirk Nylen, PhD outlines progress in this space. Among the many therapeutic areas #JourneysMetabolic supports with our EHR-interoperable digital therapeutic, patients with mental health disorders have incredibly profound clinical impact that truly give their lives back. 50-60% of #bipolar patients, for example are non-responsive to medications, a staggering number. There is hope in what many traditionally suggest is hopeless. Not any more. #ketogenic #digitaltherapeutics #insulinresistance #valuebasedcare #baszuckigroup #metabolicpsychiatry

The field of metabolic psychiatry is absolutely fascinating. In the past few years, we've done a fairly good job of helping people connect the dots between metabolic/mitochondrial dysfunction and end-organ disease. Metabolic disease in the pancreas manifests as prediabetes/diabetes. Metabolic disease in the liver manifests as MASLD/MASH. Metabolic disease in the vascular system manifests as ASCVD. But as a whole, most of us have largely ignored the brain. It makes sense that metabolic dysfunction in the brain leads to diseases of the brain - not only Alzheimer's disease (which is now getting dubbed type I diabetes) but bipolar mood disorder, depression, anxiety, ADHD - and so many more. When you dive deep into biochemistry, it makes complete sense. Props to all the visionary leaders in the field of #metabolicpsychiatry: Christopher Palmer, Georgia Ede MD, Shebani Sethi MD, ABOM, Matthew Bernstein and so many more!

Dr. Judith Joseph MD MBA and Dr. Deepa Voleti are board-certified psychiatrists who work on research studies at our clinic while also seeing their own private patients outside of the practice. In this video, they discuss the potential therapeutic benefits of treating patients with psychedelic medicine. Antidepressant medications, which are often used to treat mood disorders like depression, might not work for patients, creating a cycle of frustration due to lack of treatment options. For this reason, healthcare professionals have started thinking outside the box of how alternative medications, like psychedelics, can help treat different mental health conditions. Psychedelics are a class of psychoactive substances that alter perception, mood, and cognitive processes. Examples of psychedelics include LSD and psilocybin, which is an ingredient contained in certain types of mushrooms. Psychedelics have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Shamans, or individuals who guide psychedelic experiences, have been trained to create a sense of connection and groundedness, increasing the likelihood of a positive perspective on the experience. Recently, more clinical trials have studied how the use of psychedelics can treat a wide variety of mental health conditions. To assess improvement of symptoms in these studies, there is a tool called the “Mystical Experiences Questionnaire”, which is used to measure people’s experiences when they use psychedelic drugs. Like shamans, mental health professionals are trained to guide patients using psychedelic substances while also providing therapy sessions. The future of psychedelic therapy is quickly approaching, and it may provide the key insights into helping patients reach a state of stability and healing. Follow our page to learn more about the therapeutic benefits of psychedelic medicine - this is only the beginning! #psychiatry #research #psychedelic

Many patients often come in with lots of questions about ketamine 🤔 At Bluewater Psychiatry, we’re here every step of the process. During your ketamine session, we carefully administer your infusion, typically lasting around 40 minutes. In the first 20 minutes, you may notice some blurred vision and feelings of lightness. During the last 20 minutes, many start to feel euphoria, heightened senses, and talkativeness 😌🌱 Learn more about the process and get answers to some of our most frequently asked questions here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e-DZiuQn #KetamineTherapy #DepressionTreatment #AnxietyRelief #MentalWellness

🧠🌱 This World Mental Health Day, let's explore the profound connection between our gut and brain! 🔎 A recent study by Hussein Sabit et al. investigates the effect of probiotic supplementation on the gut–brain axis in psychiatric patients. This research highlights how disturbances in the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and metabolic pathways can influence psychiatric disorders. With over 100 trillion microbial cells in our intestines, the gut microbiota plays a crucial role in mental health. 👉 This article sheds light on how microbial metabolites like short-chain fatty acids and tryptophan metabolites can affect mood and behavior, paving the way for potential microbiota-based therapies. Read the full article for insights into the microbiota's role in psychiatric disorders and the promise of probiotics: https://lnkd.in/e86HhaA9 #WorldMentalHealthDay #GutBrainAxis #Probiotics #MentalHealth #PsychiatricDisorders #Research

"Side-effects of psychiatric medication impair quality of life and functioning. Furthermore, they contribute to morbidity, mortality, stigma, and poor treatment concordance resulting in relapse of psychiatric illness. Guidelines recommend discussing side-effects with patients when making treatment decisions, but a synthesis of antidepressant and antipsychotic side-effects to guide this process is missing, and considering all side-effects is a complex, multidimensional process. We aimed to create comprehensive databases of antipsychotic and antidepressant side effects, and a digital tool to support database navigation". . https://lnkd.in/gCF63pv7

Check out this excellent overview of the role of metabolic therapies for severe mental illness by Kirk Nylen and Burcin Ikiz in Psychology Today. Individuals and families deserve to know about this low risk intervention to manage these conditions. Instead of the side effects of sedation, metabolic syndrome and tardive dyskinesia, we can talk about the side benefits of improved metabolic health, increased energy, and improved cognition.
At Baszucki Group at Metabolic Mind we believe that metabolic therapies should be on the menu when treating people with bipolar disorder and other serious mental illnesses. These are well-researched, evidence-based therapies that can and do transform lives. Thanks to Burcin Ikiz, PhD for making this happen!

Unlocking Personalized Mental Health Care with PGx Testing 🧠💊 Mental health treatment can often feel like trial and error, with patients responding differently to psychotropic medications. The unpredictability can lead to unnecessary suffering and side effects, making the journey to finding the right treatment challenging. Enter pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing, a game-changer for both mental health providers and patients. By identifying genetic variations 🧬 that affect drug metabolism and neurotransmitter function, PGx testing can help guide more personalized treatment decisions. Research backs this up—patients receiving PGx-guided treatment, as noted in a 2018 JAMA Psychiatry study, saw significant improvements in depression symptoms compared to traditional approaches. 📈 Are you ready to offer more targeted solutions so that patients can experience more effective, symptom-relieving care? PGxAlly can help! #MentalHealth #PGxTesting #Pharmacogenomics #PersonalizedMedicine #genetictesting #pgx #precisionmedicine
